Google Assistant Is Being Discontinued. Here Is Everything Android Users Need to Know

After nearly ten years of “Hey Google,” Google Assistant’s time is up. Google has confirmed a firm shutdown date, and this time there is no delay coming.
The shutdown date
Google Assistant begins phasing out on Android starting September 4, 2026. This is not a soft deprecation. Once the rollout reaches your device, Assistant stops functioning entirely, and there is no way to switch back to it. The transition was originally scheduled for the end of 2025 but was pushed into 2026 so Gemini could mature enough to take over cleanly.
Which devices are affected
The shutdown covers Android phones and tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, Gemini-compatible headphones and earbuds paired to an Android device, and vehicles using Android Auto through a phone connection. If your car has Google Built-in, meaning it runs Android Automotive OS natively rather than mirroring your phone, you are exempt. Assistant will keep working there beyond September 4.
Google Home speakers, Google TV, and smart displays are also outside the scope of this particular shutdown, though Gemini is being rolled out to those device categories on a separate timeline.
What replaces it
Gemini becomes the default assistant experience on Android. It takes over “Hey Google” voice activation, smart home controls, and the core assistant functions Assistant used to handle. Google has also introduced Gemini Spark, an agent-style model that, with permission, can access logged-in accounts to complete multi-step tasks like scheduling appointments or filling out forms, something Assistant was never built to do.
What you lose in the switch
This is the part worth paying attention to before the migration reaches your device. Several Assistant features do not have a confirmed Gemini equivalent yet.
Interpreter Mode, which allowed real-time spoken translation across 26 languages on supported devices, was already removed from Assistant earlier this year with nothing replacing it in Gemini. That is a real loss for anyone using it at a service desk, in customer-facing roles, or in multilingual households.
Family Bell announcements, birthday reminders, and scheduled daily updates like a recurring spoken weather report have also been dropped without a confirmed replacement. Some voice-based photo commands, like asking your assistant to favorite or search photos by when and where they were taken, are gone as well.
If any of these are part of your daily routine, the right move is to open the Gemini app now, before Google auto-migrates your device, and check what still works.
Why Google is doing this
The honest answer is that voice assistants built around firing off single commands do not match what people expect from AI anymore. Assistant was designed to recognize a command and execute an isolated action. Gemini is built to understand intent and hold context across multiple steps in a conversation. Google frames this as evolution, but it is really a full replacement of the underlying model behind the product, not an upgrade to the old one.
What this means if you build on Android
If you have shipped any app with Assistant-based voice triggers, App Actions, or smart home integrations tied to the old Assistant intents, this is the point to audit that integration. Migrations of this scale in the Android ecosystem tend to move fast once the shutdown date is public, and there is rarely a long grace period once enforcement starts.
Google Assistant launched in 2016. Ten years later, its replacement is not a new version of the same idea; it is a different kind of assistant entirely.
