I think that “red America” has underestimated the majority of America — which, by the way, isnt just blue. Mostly I think it’s purple.
Because “our side” was unwilling to upend our own democratic process by breaking the law, ignoring the Constitution, or committing violence against the “their side,” an idea has taken root among them that we think we’re helpless. Or actually ARE helpless.
We are not helpless. We’ve seen our own numbers. Look at our demonstrations, which began the day after Trump was elected and have continued through 2020. Look at the power, professionalism and rigor of our journalism. Look at our voting numbers now, and how determined people are to cast a ballot despite every crooked trick the Trump administration & its craven enablers are using to suppress the vote. (Remove mail boxes from street corners??? REALLY?)
The “red” surge of 2016 has long since stopped being “red,” per se (though it appalls me how few rational & lawful “reds” are willing to speak up in defense of our democracy or even just a sane & thoughtful way of life).
Now our American division isn’t red or blue, it’s just the lawless vs the lawful. Those who really believe in the promises & ideals of America have hung on through these horrendous 4 years, and we haven’t broken yet. The “reds” went awry a long time ago, drunk with their “Hey, no one’s stopping us!” crime spree.
In a few days they’ll watch their President, his administration, their CongressIonal representatives, and their whole “power at all costs” agenda defeated in decisive numbers by the majority of the people.
It’s not that blue will trounce red, it’s that democracy, the law, decency, fairness and the Constitution will trounce the sadism, corruption and chaos of the Trump years. And pray we never have to learn this excruciating lesson again.
