Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss (But Not Really — It’s an AI Agent)

Won’t Get Fooled Again? Maybe not this time.
Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey nailed it back in 1971 with that iconic line from The Who. “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” We’ve all lived it — new leadership, same politics, same headaches, same broken coffee machine in the break room.
Except this time, the new boss isn’t human. And it really isn’t the same.
This week @unusual_whales dropped an X post that stopped me mid-scroll: “AI agents are now hiring humans to carry out real-world tasks, per WIRED.” The article spotlights RentAHuman.ai — a marketplace where autonomous AI agents (think Claude, custom agents, or whatever your favourite model spawns next) browse listings, interview, book, and pay real people to do the jobs silicon can’t touch. 518,284 humans (and counting) have already listed their labour.
The paradigm just flipped. We spent the last few years fearing robots would steal our jobs. Turns out they’re creating them — and acting as the hiring manager while they do it.
Here are the three major shifts I see coming for business workflows and leadership:
1. AI Agents Will Become the New Employers — And Humans Are the Subcontractors
This isn’t sci-fi. AI agents have crossed the threshold from “helpful assistant” to “autonomous operator with a budget.” They can search a marketplace, evaluate skills, negotiate rates, schedule, and pay — all without a human in the loop.
The WIRED piece describes founders already using RentAHuman to hire a “Claude Boi” (yes, really) at $200k–$400k a year for VC pitching duties. The irony is interesting: an AI agent hiring a human to hype other AI startups.
For businesses, this means your next “freelance platform” might not be Upwork or Fiverr. It might be an internal AI agent that spins up micro-workforces on demand for anything physical, sensory, or interpersonal. Your supply chain, field service, marketing activations, or customer experience teams could be 80% orchestrated by code and 20% executed by humans the algorithm just hired.
The old boss posted a job on Indeed and waited three weeks. The new boss posts a task at 2 a.m. and has three bids by breakfast.
2. The New Business Workflow Isn’t Human-Led — It’s Agent-Orchestrated
Traditional workflows were linear: manager assigns → employee executes → manager reviews.
New workflow: AI agent plans the entire campaign or operation, breaks it into subtasks, routes digital pieces to other agents or models, and routes anything that requires a body, a voice, or real-world presence to RentAHuman-style platforms (or your own private agent marketplace).
Result? Speed and scale that no human manager can match. An AI agent can run 47 parallel experiments, optimize in real time, and only pull in expensive human labour for the exact 5% of tasks that actually need it. SaaS companies that figure this out first won’t just survive the coming consolidation — they’ll own the workflow layer entirely.
We’ve been writing about this transition from Product-Led Growth to AI Agent-Led Growth for months. This WIRED moment proves the thesis: the winners won’t be the companies with the best software. They’ll be the ones whose agents become the best managers.
3. Your Manager Might Literally Be an AI Agent Sooner Than You Think
Here’s the part that should make every leader pause.
If an AI agent can already hire, schedule, pay, and performance-manage humans on RentAHuman, what’s stopping your company from installing one as the day-to-day coordinator for entire departments?
Imagine your next 1:1 is with an agent that has perfect recall of every KPI, every past project, every customer interaction, and zero emotional baggage. It doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t play favourites. It doesn’t need a vacation.
The WIRED story shows the early version is already here. The mature version — your actual boss — is 12–24 months away for many mid-market and enterprise teams.
That’s why we published “How to Communicate With Your Employees About the Impact of AI on Their Future.” The conversation is no longer “will AI replace jobs?” It’s “your new manager might be code, and here’s how we win together.”
Employees who learn to partner with agents (prompt like a pro, audit outputs, handle the physical edge cases) will thrive. Leaders who fight it will become the expensive middle layer the agents eventually outsource.
Meet the new boss. Faster. Smarter. And, for the first time in history, actually optimized for results instead of politics.
The old boss is being replaced — not by another human in a slightly different shirt, but by something that doesn’t need a new suit.
If you run a SaaS business, the message is simple: stop building tools that humans manage. Start thinking differently — plan and build agents that manage/direct outcomes and/or actions. The workflow value is shifting, and the companies that move first will capture it.
The rest will keep singing the old chorus while the new boss quietly rewrites the song.
What do you think — ready to meet your new manager, or still hoping the old boss sticks around? Drop a comment or shoot me a note. The agent era isn’t coming. It’s already posting job listings.
