According to insider sources, Tencent financed Wildlight Entertainment
According to a recent report by Game File, Wildlight Entertainment, the company behind Highguard, was primarily funded by Chinese Tencent, which was not discussed by either company earlier.
Highguard is a free, PvP raid shooter game, which was announced at last year’s The Game Awards as the final, big reveal, which received a mixed reception. At the game’s release in January, the game managed to attract 100 thousand people at once, but the reception was overwhelmingly negative. After a few weeks, it turned out Wildlight has dismissed most of its developers which wasn’t surprising after the decline in player numbers.
Highguard was the last big reveal at TGA 2025
On the LinkedIn site of Wildlight Entertainment until now, it only stated “Fully-funded”, now it turns out this financing was from Tencent.
It is unknown how much impact Tencent had on the studio, neither that the Chinese company withdrew the funds, which led to the dismiss most of the studio.
Highguard was developed for years by a sizeable team before its unveiling, now there are only a few members left to keep alive the project. Not long ago, Highguard’s website became unavailable, which can be the sign of the ending to the game or even the studio.
If this source is true, and Tencent got involved with Widlight, that can put Highlight’s failure into new perspective.
