“The Girl They Talked About: Healing From Years of Silent Hurt”

There are some wounds that don’t look serious from the outside, but stay with you for years. Being talked about, judged, excluded, or laughed at constantly during childhood changes the way a person sees the world. You start questioning yourself before questioning others. “Was I not good enough?” “Was it because of my background?” “Was I different?” And when these things happen repeatedly, the pain slowly turns into trauma.

Sometimes people backbite others for reasons that have nothing to do with the person they are targeting. Insecurity, jealousy, herd mentality, or simply the need to feel superior often makes people cruel. But when you are the one receiving that treatment, especially as a child, it feels deeply personal. You carry those memories into adulthood. Even when people are kind to you later in life, trust becomes difficult because a part of you is still expecting betrayal.

Recently, when I found out that people I considered friends were speaking badly about me behind my back, it hurt more than the situation itself. It reminded me of my childhood the fear, confusion, and loneliness I once felt. Old wounds reopened. Overthinking became unavoidable because trauma has a way of making the past feel present again.

But this time, something was different.

I took a stand for myself.

That may seem small to others, but for someone who spent years silently tolerating disrespect, it is huge. My younger self would have been terrified to speak up. She would have stayed quiet just to avoid rejection or conflict. But now, at 21, I am learning that protecting my peace is more important than being liked by everyone.

Healing from years of backbiting and emotional hurt is not easy. It affects confidence, trust, and the way you connect with people. But healing also means realizing that not everyone deserves access to your heart. Some people will misunderstand you, judge you, or create stories about you no matter what you do. Their behavior is a reflection of them, not your worth.

I still have moments where the trauma hurts. I still overthink. But I am also proud of how far I’ve come. I survived the version of life that once made me feel small. And now, instead of shrinking myself to fit into people’s opinions, I’m finally learning to choose myself.

Maybe the pain will not disappear overnight, but every time I stand up for myself, I prove to my childhood self that she is no longer alone.
