Artist Who Refused To Break

Jennifer Finch, the bassist for the groundbreaking punk band L7, died on July 19, 2026 at age 59 after a battle with brain cancer. She was a recovering addict, a photographer, a cancer survivor, and the co-founder of Rock 4 Choice, an influential pro-choice advocacy group.

She shared stages with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Her story is one of survival, brilliant creativity, and a refusal to let rejection define her.

Finch was born at the Salvation Army Home for Unwed Mothers in Los Angeles on August 5, 1966, and adopted in 1967 by Robert Edward Finch, an aeronautics engineer, and Sandra Jacobson.

The marriage ended in divorce in 1974, and the adoptive dad was awarded custody. He was also an amateur photographer and encouraged her creative development.

Jennifer attended her first Ramones concert at age 11 and then immersed herself in the Southern California punk scene.

A Doubtful “Reunion”

In 2025, Finch located her real mother and reached out. The response was brutal. Her mom wanted nothing to do with her. The rejection was not gentle, subtle, or ambivalent, it was a hard “no.”

Too many adoptees know this story. They have lived it or dreaded it. The search that was supposed to bring answers only confirms the original loss. The mother who walked away does it again. The second abandonment echoes the first.

The Superpower

Finch refused to let the rejection define her. She called her mother’s hostility her “superpower.” It taught her to meet people exactly where they are. She decided to drop expectations of how others “should” behave, and embraced a deep humility that most people avoid.

This is not a tidy redemption arc. It is a smart and nurturing survival strategy. An adoptee who stops expecting their mom to change stops giving her power over the present. Those who decide to drop the fantasy of a warm reunion make room for relationships that can thrive.

Some Welcoming Siblings

She focused instead on half-siblings who did respond. Their mother may have refused, but a brother and sisters welcomed her.

Finch built deep bonds with them, which she found wonderfully rewarding. The family she found was not what she imagined, but it was real and healing.

Posthumous Memoir

Finch wrote a vibrant memoir before her death. Titled Shooting Up and Making Out, it is scheduled for release in January 2027.

The book promises to be a candid, humorous, and meaningful account of her life: the mysteries, addiction, music, obstacles, and survival. She was doing the work that so many adoptees do, trying to make sense of the senseless, trying to find a language for loss, trying to turn pain into something useful. A uniquely difficult human experience.

Lesson She Left

An adoptee who finds a firmly closed door does not have to break it down or patiently wait for it to open from the other side. They can opt to meet people where they are. Some will refuse and others will show kindness. Build warm connections with good souls who wish to do the same.

Like so many other adoptees, Finch did not get the mom she wanted.

She focused on something different, taking the opportunity to see her hurdles as gifts: of seeing clearly, of humility, and of knowing that the painful rejection was not really about her as a person.

She found her truth and made peace with it. That is a rare and difficult achievement for anyone who lands on the planet in a dark void, starting at birth. Jennifer deserves to be remembered for it. Rest peacefully.
