1. Chicken Coup

Owning chickens used to be a common practice.

In Ukraine, where I was born, it was normal for households to have at least a few chickens in their backyards. You’d feed them food scraps, and in return, they would provide a sustainable source of protein. If you couldn’t eat all the eggs produced, you’d share them with your neighbors.

This communal approach to farming built social connections while also saving costs. With the current economy and housing crisis, it’s more relevant than ever.

Consider this:

A dozen organic eggs can cost around $10, while an egg-laying chicken costs about $20. A chicken can lay approximately 5 eggs per week, 20 eggs per month, or 240 eggs per year. This means that a $20 chicken can produce 20 dozen eggs, which is equivalent to $200 worth of organic eggs. That’s a 1000% return on investment (ROI)!

3. Ice Bath

Ice baths are popular.

Everyone and their grandma are talking about the health benefits of taking a regular dip into the freezing waters.

But purchasing an ice bath can be expensive; however, there are ways to build one yourself cheaply. A common method is to convert a chest freezer. You can often find used chest freezers at a low cost on Facebook Marketplace. Just seal the inside with marine silicone to make it watertight.

4. Bunk Bed

If you’re like me, you don’t live in a mansion.

My living space is relatively small, so I needed to be creative with how I arrange my room. One solution was to build a bunk bed. This allowed me to place the sleeping area on top and my desk and workspace at the bottom, maximizing usable space.

It has been one of the best DIY projects I’ve completed so far!

5. Upcycling Garden Bench

We’ve all seen it before: The sun, wind, and weather are gradually deteriorating our beloved outdoor furniture.

At one point, I was considering throwing out my garden bench due to its rusting cast-iron frame and cracked planks. Instead of tossing it, I decided to refurbish the bench. I sourced timber pallets from industrial areas in Adelaide, removed the nails, sanded the wood, and applied a weather-resistant coating.

While it may not be the prettiest piece, it is a unique creation that will last for many more years.
