Through the Looking Glass: An Interview with Yocilly

Q: How would you describe your music and the world you’re building with it?

Yocilly: I’ve always wanted to bring a world of my own to life — one that feels soft, surreal, and honest, like a lucid dream. I make dream pop from my bedroom, but what I really create is a feeling — a space for anyone who’s ever felt out of place to finally feel seen.

Q: Where do your songs come from? Do they have personal meaning?

Yocilly: Every song I write carries a different story. I like when people find their own meaning in my lyrics, but for me, each track was inspired by real-life experiences — moments that taught me something, broke me a little, or reminded me I was still growing.

Some of my older songs are a bit raw or even vulgar. I don’t always agree with everything I said back then, but I still value it. Those songs came from honest emotions. They’re snapshots of who I was in that moment — and I’ll always respect that version of myself.

Q: Can you walk us through your creative process?

Yocilly: My ideas hit me out of nowhere. If I don’t capture them right then and there, I probably never will. That unpredictability keeps my music real. It’s like catching lightning in a bottle — it happens fast, and if I don’t act, it’s gone. But when I do catch it, it feels magical.

Q: Your life has clearly influenced your music. Can you share some of your experiences?

Yocilly: I’ve had to leave the same toxic home more than once. My family feels like a drug — addictive, familiar, but deeply unhealthy. The last time I left, I was 25, and that’s when I officially became homeless.

It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I had asked God to help me find a way out, and when it finally happened, it felt like He forcefully pushed me out of that environment for my own good. It was painful and freeing all at once. That experience changed everything — it taught me strength, faith, and how to start over.

My music became the place where I could process all of that — the heartbreak, the chaos, the lessons, and the little moments of peace in between.

Q: What does “Yocilly” mean to you personally?

Yocilly: Yocilly isn’t just a name — it’s my alter-universe. It’s where I turn pain into melody, chaos into calm, and loneliness into beauty. My dream is to keep evolving, to keep creating that space for anyone who’s ever felt misunderstood, and to remind people that no matter where you start, you can always turn your story into something beautiful.
