ITV’s “Unforgotten”, with a new six-part season, returned Feb. 9

ITV’s Unforgotten, one of the United Kingdom’s most beloved crime dramas, returned to our screens on Sunday, 9 Feb. 2025 with Andy Wilson’s season six opener.

Unforgotten, quintessentially redefining what a cold case crime drama is, has all the hallmarks of the well-established genre and more. Each season thus far, including the latest six episode offering, revolves around the discovery of a grisly murder most horrid.

Adding significant realism to each episode, giving seasons greater depth as each instalment unfolds, there is of course plenty of personal drama and plot twists.

Let’s also not forget, noting the lead detectives assigned to the team as a possible nod to the oddest of couples ever seen on television, DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunny Khan were certainly odd. Their professional relationship, given their backgrounds, should not have worked.

But, being what they are, exceptional professionals, Stuart and Khan jelled in ways n one could have possibly imagined. Stuart and Khan made it work. The same, despite there being a significant frosty beginning, could be said of Khan’s professional relationship with the new detective chief inspector.

Sinéad Keenan, having joined the series main cast at the beginning of the previous season, returned as DCI Jessie James. Yes. That’s right. DCI Jessie James. Do you get the reference?

Keenan’s character is named Jessie James and as Sanjeev Bhaskar’s DI Sunny Khan noted in the fifth season finale when he jokingly referenced nineteenth century bank and train robber Jesse Woodson James, this particular Jessie James has not been responsible for holding up stagecoaches.

Keenan, following Nicola Walker’s shocking exit from the series during the fourth season finale, joined Unforgotten as a series regular. Walker’s DCI Cassie Stuart, in Wilson’s fourth season finale instalment, met with her demise after being involved in a road traffic accident no one saw coming until it was too late.

Current series regulars, further to Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan, include Jordan Long, Pippa Nixon, Carolina Main, Georgia Mackenzie and Michelle Bonnard. Long, Nixon, Main, Mackenzie and Bonnard respectively play DS Murray Boulting, DC Karen ‘Kaz’ Willetts, DC Fran Lingley, Leanne Balcombe and Sally Fields.

DC Karen ‘Kaz’ Willetts, following Nixon’s exit from Unforgotten at the end of the first season, was first season again in the fourth season and has remained part of the team. Leanne Balcombe, portrayed by Mackenzie’s, is not a police officer. She works as a pathologist. Bonnard’s Sally Fields, not working with the police in any capacity, is DI Sunny Khan’s romantic partner.

MyAnna Buring, for the sixth season, joined the cast as correspondent Melinda Ricci. Ricci, in this fictionalized London, works at GB News-style mainstream media organization known as Britannia News.

Emmett J. Scanlan, possibly best known for his portrayal of Billy Grade in Peaky Blinders and Jimmy Kinsella in Kin, plays Patrick. Patrick, Melinda’s fiancé, was paralyzed in an accident.

Maximilian Fairley, Elham Ehsas, Victoria Hamilton, Damien Molony and Michele Dotrice, respectively playing Martin “Marty” Baines, Asif Syed, Juliet Cooper, Father Luke Ryan and Dot, are part of the sixth season cast.

Fairley, Ehsas, Hamilton and Molony, each with well-established acting resumes, are all recognizable to British television watching and cinemagoing audiences.

If the name Elham Ehsas doesn’t immediately pop for you, given how extensive his work is to date, you will certainly remember him from such productions as Homeland, Young Wallander, Shantaram and The Agency. The Agency, reminiscent of Berlin Station, should be on your must-watch list.

Molony, best known for his work on Suspects and Crashing, has a somewhat controversial detective series currently in the works. The actor, with no set premiere date having been made known, is to play the titular Jim Bergerac in a re-imagined reboot of the classic Jersey set Bergerac.

The original series, having been televised in the British Isles from 1981 to 1991, featured John Nettles as the titular fictional detective. Molony, with Nettles having originated the character, has some seriously big shoes to fill.

There are hopes, noting how Nettles moved on during his career to play Detective Chief Inspector Thomas “Tom” Barnaby in Midsomer Murders (1997–2011), Molony will somehow find away to make the series titular character his own.

Jersey, for American readers, is not a reference to New Jersey. The Jersey depicted in Bergerac, officially the Bailiwick of Jersey in real life, is nowhere near the United States. It is an island that can found between the British Isles and France.

All six Unforgotten season six episodes can be found on the streaming service ITVX. Whilst binge watchers will love the all release approach, naturally, traditionalists might want a steady release.

The sixth season premiere , relative to the terrestrial channel ITV, are being televised on Sunday, 9 Feb. 2025. Episodes two through six, one per night, will be coming to ITV on Monday, 10 Feb. 2025, Sunday, 16 Feb. 2025, Monday, 17 Feb. 2025, Sunday, 23 Feb. 2025 and Monday, 24 Feb. 2025.

Season Six Overview…

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E1. “Episode One”…

When suspected human remains are uncovered on Whitney Marsh, naturally, DCI Jessie James and DI Sunny Khan are immediately called to the scene. Cold cases, as we have seen during the entire series run thus far, is the team’s jam. The team, not straightaway, always gets to the bottom of every case investigated.

This latest cold case, proving every bit as grisly as previous murders investigated, is one we’re not going to forget. The victim, Gerry Cooper, will obviously be Unforgotten.

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E2. “Episode Two”…

The team members, as they have done with previous cold cases, investigate the deceased’s past. James and Khan, make contact with university history lecturer Juliet Cooper.

The discovered remains are that of the university history lecturer’s missing husband. The history lecturer, with numerous issues of her own, doesn’t take the news well. No one questioned in connection with the cold case is as innocent as they first seem.

James and the team, eventually bringing Martin ‘Marty’ Baines in for further questioning, discover the deceased had known Asif Syed, Melinda Ricci and Marty.

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E3. “Episode Three”…

Secrets from the deceased’s past, as such things never remain undiscovered, come to light. James, referencing her personal life away from work, reaches out to her sister.

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E4. “Episode Four”…

The Bishop Street team, with the details of the deceased’s life becoming clearer and one suspect already being questioned, find suspects further afield.

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E5. “Episode Five”…

Lies are soon uncovered and suspects are unsurprisingly taken into custody. James, meanwhile, plans a conversation with Steve James.

‘Unforgotten’: S6.E6. “Episode Six”…

James and Khan, for better or worse, finally get the truth from Asif Syed, Martin ‘Marty’ Baines, Melinda Ricci and Juliet Cooper. Both senior detectives, on and off the case, happen upon a truth that ultimately leads them to making difficult life-changing decisions.

Oh Wonder’s song “All We Do", the theme to Unforgotten, possesses an ineffable quality that transcends words. The song speaks to me on an emotionally tear-jerking level that many songs fail to reach.

The song, the furth track on the eponymous studio recorded album Oh Wonder, has been used in numerous film and television productions. The referenced album, in addition to two unreleased songs, is apparently the accumulation of singles released monthly throughout 2014–2015.
