You Bring the Wilderness

Inside, crisp cool conditioned air At my desk of plastic veneer Gazing at a glowing screen Blue light portal to a digital world.

A door flies open Cold AC flows out I feel the warm summer air enter in And so do you, my child.

With a ringing laugh You leap to me for an embrace And bring the Gifts of Summer To me.

I smell the Summer sun Upon your gold-brown hair A warm and celestial crown Placed upon your head.

The dust of hidden wooded trails Covers your little bare feet Sap of pine tree branches climbed, Fragrant and sticky on your hands.

Caught in the fibers of your clothes Cling the remnants of a warm wind Carried from its embrace, to yours, To mine.

Pockets damp and full of river stones Treasures smooth and cool. You pull back with eyes alight Filled with wild wonder and life.

So enrobed you outshine any royal prince. Ah, to be a child on a Summer day.
