SUGA SWEET • Faky

A shot of fun sugar-pop from Japan

Here are three songs on Australian radio right now:

  • Despacito, by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber, a song sung approximately 70% in Spanish and 30% in English;
  • Mi Gente, by J. Balvin and Willy William, a song entirely in Spanish; and
  • Reggaetón Lento, by CNCO and Little Mix, which is around 50% Spanish and 50% English.

That’s not even mentioning that Drinkee song by Sofi Tukker which got a bit of Australian airplay despite being solely in Portugese.

It’s super exciting to have so many non-English language songs on the radio and on the charts, and to have so many people so open to enjoying new music even if they don’t speak the language used in the song.

Which is why FAKY’s Suga Sweet is so exciting.

FAKY are a four-piece girl group from Japan. They last released an album in June, but they’ve moved on very quickly and are now releasing more new music that wasn’t on the album.

Suga Sweet is about 55% in English, and 45% in Japanese, so it’s not the most likely radio hit in Australia, but it’s got an undeniably brilliant pop sound, and if radio can play Despacito and Reggaetón Lento, well, why the heck not play Suga Sweet too?

The whole song is on Spotify here, or you can listen to this convenient verse and chorus they’ve put on YouTube.
