Recognising the Visionaries Who Shaped the Legacy of HRRG Global Honours Programme

Recognition has the power to inspire. It acknowledges achievement, affirms service, and reminds society that principled leadership deserves to be celebrated.

That belief has been at the heart of Human Rights Reporters Ghana’s (HRRG) international awards programme since its inception.

When the organisation launched the inaugural HRRG Global RightsCon Awards in 2026, the vision extended far beyond presenting plaques and citations.

The objective was to establish a credible platform that celebrates leaders, institutions, and changemakers whose work advances human rights, democratic governance, sustainable development, social justice, diplomacy, and public service across Africa and the world.

Today, that vision continues under a new identity.

The programme has officially evolved into the HRRG Global RightsShield Awards — a name that reflects its growing international ambition while preserving everything that made the inaugural edition historic.

A New Name, the Same Enduring Mission

Rebranding often raises questions about continuity. In this case, however, the answer is straightforward.

Only the name has changed.

The honours conferred during the inaugural edition remain exactly as they were awarded. Every recipient continues to hold the same recognition, and every award remains an enduring part of the programme’s history.

The transition to the HRRG Global RightsShield Awards represents a strategic step towards strengthening the programme’s independent global identity. It does not alter its purpose, diminish its credibility, or rewrite its history.

Instead, it builds upon the solid foundation established by the inaugural class of honourees.

Celebrating Leaders Who Inspire Change

The first edition recognised an extraordinary group of individuals and institutions whose leadership has influenced communities, strengthened democratic institutions, defended civic freedoms, promoted sustainable development, and inspired hope across Africa.

Among the inaugural honourees were:

H.E. John Dramani Mahama

• H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, honoured with the African Statesmanship & Democratic Renewal Award.

H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu

• H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, recipient of the African Democratic Leadership & Regional Integration Award.

Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno (PLO) Lumumba

• Professor Patrick Loch Otieno (PLO) Lumumba, celebrated with the Pan-African Legal Thought & Moral Leadership Award for his enduring contributions to constitutionalism, ethical governance, justice, and Pan-African thought.
• Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, honoured with the African Diplomacy & Global Solidarity Award for Sustainable Development.

The inaugural edition also recognised distinguished leadership in public health, sanitation, civic space, digital rights, civil society, youth advocacy, and local governance.

• Ing. Dr. George Asiedu for leadership in sanitation and sustainable city development.

Ms. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri

• Ms. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, Executive Director of Spaces for Change, West Africa, for advancing civic freedoms and social justice.

Access Now and the RightsCon Global Team

• Access Now and the RightsCon Global Team, recognised for their contribution to global digital rights and movement building.

Eminence Lead International LBG

• Eminence Lead International LBG for promoting inclusive development and women’s economic empowerment.

Joshua Elikplim Adjei

• Joshua Elikplim Adjei, Programme Officer of Human Rights Reporters Ghana, for emerging leadership in human rights advocacy and youth engagement.

Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei

• Hon. Alfredos Nii Anyetei, Municipal Chief Executive of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly, for excellence in local governance and community transformation.

Together, these recipients represent different sectors, different countries, and different professional journeys. What unites them is a shared commitment to improving lives and strengthening societies.
