In Islam, seeking knowledge is a highly valued command and considered as a noble act. Behind the importance of knowledge, there is another equally crucial aspect to consider, which is adab (etiquette/manners). The principle “adab dulu sebelum ilmu” teaches us that to acquire beneficial knowledge, we must first possess good manners.

A wise saying goes, “Knowledge without adab is like a tree without roots.” This means that knowledge obtained without being accompanied by good manners will not endure or bring benefit to a person’s life. Adab teaches us to have humility, respect, and empathy for others. Without adab, the knowledge acquired may become useless and even harmful to ourself and others.

Many people believe they possess extensive knowledge but still belittle others. A person who truly understands religion is not those who merely possesses much religious knowledge but someone who implements it, regardless of the amount of knowledge they have. Adab leads us to be highly empathetic individuals, refrains from mocking others, and equips us with courteous speech.

Why is “Adab First, Then Knowledge” Important?

Without adab, the knowledge gained can be misused, causing someone to become arrogant or even damage social relationships. Adab is the foundation that ensures the knowledge we acquire not only changes our understanding but also improves our morals and behavior.

Knowledge accompanied by good adab shapes a person’s character, guiding them to become wiser individuals and bringing positive impacts to their surroundings. Conversely, knowledge without adab tends to lead a person away from goodness and fails to provide the intended benefits. In this journey of life, we prioritize not only intellectual ability but also the adab and good character as taught by the Prophet Muhammad saw.
