How I Passed CKS in 3 Weeks !! — And Most Kubernetes Certifications Are a Waste of Time !!

I passed the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) exam, and recently I was reflecting on the preparation strategy that helped me succeed.

Many people ask how much time is required to pass CKS. In my case, I spent around three months studying the CKS course material, but because my exam was scheduled about a year later, I had to refresh everything before taking the actual exam. My final preparation period was only three weeks.

My Study Resources

Unlike my CKA preparation, I did not rely heavily on video courses.

The two resources that helped me the most were:

  • People Experience with the Exam.
  • CKS questions on learning platforms.

The hands-on labs significantly accelerated my preparation because they closely resembled the type of tasks you face during the exam.

Focus on Practical Scenarios

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is spending too much time on theory.

During my preparation, I focused heavily on practical questions and scenarios shared by people who had already taken the exam. While the exact questions are different, recurring topics and patterns helped me understand what skills were being tested.

Instead of memorizing answers, I tried to understand the underlying concepts behind each scenario.

Simulating the Real Exam

One technique that helped me tremendously was creating my own exam simulation environment.

I built a virtual lab environment and challenged myself to solve a full set of security-related Kubernetes tasks within one hour.

My reasoning was simple:

  • If I could finish everything in one hour during practice,
  • Then I would have enough buffer during the real exam to complete the tasks comfortably.

This approach improved both my speed and confidence.

Understand the Technology First

Another important lesson is that you should not approach CKS as a collection of commands to memorize.

For example, if you encounter a question about Falco, you should first understand:

  • What Falco is
  • Why it is used
  • How it detects suspicious activity
  • How its rules work

When you understand the technology, solving the practical tasks becomes much easier.

Time Management Is Everything

If there is one piece of advice I would give to every CKS candidate, it is this:

Learn how to manage your time.

Throughout all the Linux Foundation exams I have taken, CKS was by far the most challenging from a time-management perspective.

The technical difficulty is manageable if you have enough hands-on experience. The real challenge is solving tasks accurately while working under strict time constraints.

My recommendation is to practice under exam conditions repeatedly until working quickly becomes natural.

Are Kubernetes Certifications Worth It?

This might be controversial, but after going through the Linux Foundation certification path, I believe most DevOps engineers are wasting their time and money chasing certifications that add very little value to their careers.

For me, the only Kubernetes certifications that truly matter are CKA and CKS.

The CKA proves that you can administer Kubernetes in a practical environment, while the CKS demonstrates that you understand Kubernetes security and can apply security concepts under pressure. Together, these two certifications cover the skills that most companies actually expect from a Kubernetes-focused DevOps engineer.

I see many people spending months collecting certifications such as KCNA, CKAD, and KCSA, proudly adding more badges to their LinkedIn profiles. In my opinion, this is often a poor investment of both time and money. The same effort could be spent building real projects, contributing to open-source tools, improving troubleshooting skills, or gaining hands-on experience with production systems.

The industry has become obsessed with certification counts, titles, and achievements like “Kubestronaut.” While these accomplishments may look impressive on social media, they do not automatically make someone a better engineer.

At the end of the day, employers hire people who can solve problems, not people who have the longest list of certifications.

My advice is simple: stop chasing badges and start chasing skills. One engineer with strong Kubernetes knowledge, real-world experience, and practical troubleshooting skills is far more valuable than someone who has collected every certification available but has never operated a production cluster.

Skills Matter More Than Badges

The industry sometimes places too much emphasis on certification counts, titles, and social media achievements.

Whether someone is a Kubestronaut or holds multiple Kubernetes certifications is less important than their ability to solve real production problems.

At the end of the day:

  • Certifications can open doors.
  • Skills keep those doors open.

My advice is simple:

Focus on learning. Focus on building. Focus on solving real problems.

Don’t chase certificates for the sake of certificates. Chase knowledge and practical experience.

Those are the things that will ultimately make you a better engineer.
