Charlotte: The Companionless Pregnant Stingray

Who Is Charlotte Anyways?

If you’re an active user on TikTok or really any social media or news outlet, you may have heard a thing or two about the new viral topic, Charlotte. Charlotte is a stingray that lives in a storefront aquarium which is located in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. This stingray is famous for her pregnancy. Charlotte’s pregnancy took the world by storm as it has been stated that Charlotte has not been in a tank with any other males of her species in over 8 years.

How Is Charlotte So Famous?

Because of Charlotte’s no contact with the male species, the public went crazy over the story. When opening up the app, TikTok there were numerous TikTok’s on the “For You” page explaining the situation and these TikTok’s often accumulated numerous likes and comments. Everyone seems to be talking about it and everyone wants answers. How can Charlotte be pregnant with up to 4 pups with no male companion?

So, Just How Is Charlotte Pregnant and Companionless?

In the past couple of days, Aquarium staff have spoken out on the phenomenon with the answers that the public has been seeking. Aquarium staff are stating they believe Charlotte’s conception can be attributed to Parthenogenesis. Parthenogenesis can be defined as a rare form of asexual reproduction. Parthenogenesis, although rare, is known to have occurred in a variety of animals such as fish, insects, birds, and amphibians.

Charlotte’s Pregnancy Assumptions

Many have speculated that Charlotte’s babies will be shark-stingray hybrids as it was stated that Charlotte was covered in shark bites, and shark bites are a sign of shark mating. However, according to research scientist Kady Lyons, stingray/shark interspecies interbreeding is not biologically possible.

An Exciting Time

Because the scientists made it clear that we should not be expecting exciting new interbred shark/stingray babies, they want to also make it clear that the situation is still exciting and don’t want anyone to be let down. Scientists argue that there should still be a sense of excitement as Charlotte is the first stingray of her species that we are aware of to become pregnant by Parthenogenesis. We don’t really know why Parthenogenesis happens, but we do know that it’s cool, different, and rare. Because Parthenogenesis is so rare, it’s exciting to us to have it occur again and even more exciting for it to occur for the first time in a new species that we are aware of.
