Understanding Vape Coils: How They Work and When to Replace Them
A vape coil is one of the most important components inside a vaping device. It consists of a heating element surrounded by absorbent cotton that holds e-liquid. When the device is activated, the coil heats up and turns the e-liquid into vapour. Over time, the cotton and heating element wear down, affecting flavour, vapour production, and overall performance.
Modern devices often use mesh coils, which feature a fine metal mesh instead of a traditional wire coil. Mesh designs provide a larger surface area, allowing e-liquid to heat more evenly. This can result in improved flavour, denser vapour, and potentially longer coil life.
Choosing the right e-liquid is essential for coil longevity. Thinner e-liquids are generally better suited for smaller pod systems, while thicker high-VG liquids work best with larger, more powerful devices. Using an unsuitable e-liquid may lead to poor wicking, dry hits, and faster coil degradation. Sweetened e-liquids can also leave residue on the coil more quickly, reducing its lifespan.

The life of a vape coil varies depending on usage habits, wattage settings, e-liquid composition, and device type. Some coils may last only a few days, while others can perform well for one to two weeks or longer with proper care.
Common signs that a coil needs replacing include a burnt taste, muted flavour, reduced vapour production, difficulty inhaling, leaking, or unusual gurgling sounds. Replacing a coil is usually straightforward: install a new coil, prime the exposed cotton with a few drops of e-liquid, fill the tank, and allow it to soak for several minutes before use.
To help extend coil life, avoid chain vaping, use the recommended wattage range, keep the tank adequately filled, and always prime new coils before vaping. Proper maintenance can improve flavour consistency, enhance vapour production, and provide a smoother overall experience.
