Why FP&A Feels Like Being a Fortune Teller (But with More Spreadsheets)

If you've ever worked in FP&A, you know the job is basically part finance, part psychology, and part wizardry. One minute, you're forecasting revenue with a well-structured model; the next, you're explaining to leadership why "seasonality" isn't just a weather pattern.
Let's be real—budgets are basically our best guesses wrapped in fancy Excel formulas. We build detailed projections, analyze past performance, and then, boom! A market shift, a surprise expense, or a senior executive with a "gut feeling" changes everything. It’s like predicting the future, except the future doesn’t care about our formulas.
Scenario planning? More like "choose your own adventure" but with financial consequences. And don't even get me started on variance analysis—aka figuring out why reality refuses to match our perfect models.
But despite the chaos, FP&A is where the magic happens. We turn numbers into strategy, translate data into stories, and (hopefully) keep the business from spending its way into trouble. Plus, nothing beats the thrill of nailing a forecast—except maybe seeing your model actually get used instead of "adjusted" beyond recognition.
To my fellow FP&A professionals: Keep the coffee strong, the formulas clean, and the humor intact. Because at the end of the day, we may not have crystal balls, but we do have pivot tables. And that’s close enough.
