“Where’s Mummy, Grandma?”
“She’s gone to a special place to wait for the stork to come with your baby brother.”
Lilly knew how to embarrass her granny. The right questions, accompanied by her angelic expression, were better than all her toys.
“The stork?”
“Yes, darling. The stork always brings new babies.”
“I thought my baby brother was in Mummy’s tummy.”
Lilly saw her grandmother gulp.
Granny, for her part, was anxious to avoid the awkwardness that the truth involved.
“No, Lilly. Your brother’s already on his way with the stork, who’s carrying him in a nappy.”
Lilly considered her grandmother’s explanation. Her mummy’s version of where babies came from made more sense.
“Mummy said he’ll come out of her — ”
Granny was quick. “No, your mummy told you that because she doesn’t want you worrying about the long nine-month flight the stork is making.”
“If I get my map of the world, can you show me where it’s coming from?”
“Of course, darling.”
Just as Lilly was about to go upstairs to fetch her map, the front door opened. It was Mummy and Daddy, and with them was her new baby brother. She ran to greet them and kissed her brother.
Later, when the excitement had subsided, Lilly went to her parents’ bedroom, where her mother was feeding the baby.
“You’ve come to see your brother, darling?”
Lilly had always been precocious, and she preferred truth to fiction.
“I came to see you, Mummy, because I’m worried about Grandma.”
“Why, darling?”
“By now she ought to know the facts of life, but she doesn’t have the slightest idea where babies come from.”
Her mother wasn’t embarrassed — they were used to Lilly.
“I’ll have a word with her, darling.”
Lilly was satisfied.
Michael Cappelli came up with this wonderful piece of satire
