Lethal Ediotor: Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) Film Review

Riggs and Murtaugh return in a sequel that manages to out-action its predecessor while simultaneously tripping over its own splicing tape. It’s a masterclass in buddy movies dampened by a textbook case of the multiple directors syndrome.

The Chemistry: Extraordinary

The bond between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover isn’t just good; it’s seemingly psychic. They trade barbs with an effortless back-and-forth that feels like they’re on their tenth movie together, not their second. It’s the franchise’s lifeblood, selling a friendship that feels genuinely lived-in.

The Pesci Factor

Enter Joe Pesci as Leo Getz. A character underrated even by its creators, Joe is convincing as the quirky, short, adorable chaos wannabe agent. He adds a layer of genuinely funny comedy that fits perfectly into the ecosystem without derailing the action. He’s one of the all-time great sidekicks for me.

The “Ediot” Intervention

Here lies the self-sabotage. This film had the DNA of an 8/10 but settled for a 6 thanks to the “Idiot Editor” (AKA “Idioter,” AKA “Ediot”). Whether the cinematographer missed shots or the editor fell asleep, the film is riddled with disjointed cuts and random interruptions that kill the flow. It’s a narrative missing its connective tissue.

Politics & Pontificating

The script dives deep into Apartheid, but the result is a heavy dose of American indoctrination. We get the “white American hero” (Gibson) pontificating to other white people — ironically mirroring the rhetoric of his modern-day idol, Trump. Between the “American Savior” trope with the foreign love interest and the heavy-handed racial dialogue, the political sermonizing ultimately hinders enjoyment rather than enhancing it.

Script, Sound, and Silliness

The Good: The dialogue is sharper than the first film, avoiding the trap of a bland rehash. The action is more focused, playing the lead character’s psychoses for laughs with better aim.

The Bad: The 80s music is insufferable. If you couldn’t stand the sax and synths then, they haven’t aged a day better.

The Ugly: The plot contrivances (Spoilers incoming)are lazy. The revelation that these specific bad guys also killed Riggs’ wife is too convenient. And the truck pulling the house off the cliff? Comically ludicrous.

Final Verdict

Lethal Weapon 2 is disjointed but enjoyable. It profitably adds Pesci and deepens the central relationship, but it’s let down by unrealistic plot devices and an editor who apparently hated continuity.
