What the Heck Is Ectoplasm — and How It Got to Me

Sex, tantra, astral travel — and the unexpected doorway to ectoplasm.

By Louisa Light part 1 of 7

When the body sleeps, the subtle self — the astral body — begins to leave the physical form.

When the body sleeps, the subtle self — the astral body — begins to leave the physical form.

Leaving Tantra for Astral Travel

2012 I met a man who had spent years working through every tantric practice he could find — not as a hobby, not as a lifestyle, but as a disciplined exploration of consciousness. He looked at me and said:”Enough of sex and tantra as a path to the divine. I’m doing something new now: astral travel. I’m going there after this.”

Two spiritual teachers had told me: „Yes, you have free choice — but there are four to five moments in life that are fixed. Unshakable. Predetermined. Moments that don’t ask permission. They simply arrive, and something in you recognizes them before your mind has time to argue.

When the tantra man said he was going to learn astral travel, I felt it in my body before I understood it in my mind. Click. A certainty. This is one of those moments. I have to go. I knew it. So I went.

I drove my old camper van — a Renault Trafic — to Frankfurt. It was winter. I parked in Sachsenhausen, a district known for its nightlife. I didn’t feel safe, but I had no choice. After the first day of the seminar — theory, exercises, techniques — so far nothing had worked — I couldn’t leave my body, not even with all the tricks they taught us.

The car shook. Something unseen was moving it.

So I went to sleep in the van, a little deflated. Then something happened I will never forget. In the middle of the night I heard noises outside. And I floated — yes, hovered, without physically moving — my body still lying there — from one window to the other, checking what was going on. Wow, I thought. This must be it. My first astral travel experience.

But then the van began to move. Outside, a few drunk men were walking by — far from the van, not touching it. But the shaking continued. It scared me a little.

The next morning I described what I had experienced in the seminar, proudly, still believing it was my first conscious out-of-body-experience: the floating to the windows with my body not moving an inch and the shaking van. The instructor didn’t blink.”That wasn’t astral travel,” she said. “That was ectoplasm.”I was baffled.

Ectoplasm — what the heck is that? I had never before heard of this word in my life.

That single response started a quest that led me, eventually, all the way to Brazil.

Brazil — Going to the Specialists, Not the Stories

After the seminar, my companion decided to continue to the European headquarters of the IAC — the International Academy of Consciousness. He went. He reported back enthusiastically.

But I wanted more. I wanted the worldwide headquarters.

So I flew to Brazil — to Foz do Iguaçu, where the CEAEC campus sat near the broadest waterfalls on the planet: cascades of white water falling off the edges of three countries at once, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, with a roar you feel in your chest before you hear it with your ears.

Seventy research buildings. Lectures every day in a vast auditorium. And Professor Dr. Waldo Vieira — a man who left his body every night, remembered exactly where he went and what he did there. He had been a practicing medical doctor, and had written a foundational thousand-page book on conscientiology to document it all.

I shared a room on campus with two women from Argentina. The day I arrived we visited the waterfalls together. We stood at the railing above the Iguaçu falls and watched the water disappear into white noise below us, cascading between three countries, and agreed — half joking, half serious — to meet each other there in astral travel and compare notes afterward. It never happened. But something else did.

Iguaçu Falls — An Impressive First Sight Between Three Countries

One morning I woke up making noises with a plastic water bottle. Not in a dream — I was doing it in my sleep, or in that in-between state just before waking, and by the time I realized it was me, I was too wide awake to continue. I lay there a moment, slightly unsettled.

Then things started breaking around me. A borrowed laptop — gone. At the house of people I visited, the pump of their swimming pool simply stopped working. I know what you’re thinking: coincidence, bad luck, things fail all the time. And yes — if it had been once, or twice, or even five times over a decade, I might have agreed. But I had been watching this pattern for years before I ever heard the word ectoplasm.

Devices failing. Electronics misbehaving. Watches, above all — watches stopped working on my wrist so reliably that I had simply stopped wearing them. My house was full of clocks. Most of them broken. A friend later called it inverse electrosmog: not the devices influencing me, but me influencing them. The current going the other way. It went as far as printers and cars, especially in moments of emotional intensity. But more on that later.

The Darkened Rooms — Because Ectoplasm Is Fleeting

The campus ran daily exercises in deliberately darkened, deliberately cool rooms — because ectoplasm, as I was beginning to learn, dissolves fast in heat and light. It is light-shy. It needs darkness to form, coolness to hold its shape.

Every single time I walked into one of those rooms, each teacher said the same thing:”You have strong energies.”And when I asked what they meant, they asked back: “Do things break around you? Do watches stop?” Yes. Constantly. For years.

Inside those rooms, in the dark and the cool, my nose ran continuously — exactly like a cold, except the moment I stepped back into daylight, it stopped. Instantly. Like a tap turned off. I noticed my eyes producing fluid during healing sessions. I started yawning and burping during the exercises, and this seemed to activate the fluid further — as if the body was using every available opening to let something through.

That fluid, they told me, is the ectoplasm.

Meeting Dr. Waldo Vieira — changed my trajectory

I celebrated my 52nd birthday on campus. That day I crossed Professor Vieira in the courtyard. He looked at me, winked, and said: “Ah — you’re turning 25!”I was amazed at his humor. And I stood there a moment thinking: does he actually know my age? With this man, you could never be entirely sure what he knew and what he was playing with.

He was over 80, giving lectures to people from all over the world every single day. He woke early every morning to meet individuals before teaching at the auditorio. He was a sought-after counselor, a polymath, a man who had moved through medicine, consciousness research, and interdimensional cartography with equal seriousness.

He spoke five languages. He had mapped the non-physical world the way other scientists mapped the ocean floor: carefully, methodically, with the assumption that it was real and worth understanding.

One day I asked him directly about something hinted at in the literature — the connection between sexual energy and ectoplasm. He answered without hesitating:”Ectoplasm and sexual energy are the same.” I was baffled. I didn’t fully understand it then. I’m still turning it over now, years later. I’ll come back to it — because when a man of that caliber says something that simply, with that certainty, it deserves more than a passing note.

The Symptoms No One Could Explain

In Brazil I found two books on ectoplasm — one written by a medical doctor, one by a psychologist — both in Portuguese, both describing the symptoms from their respective clinical angles. I was starteld: About 90% of what they listed I had been living with for years. Without explanation. Despite having spent eighteen years studying medical causes for what I was experiencing.

  • Let me give you a sense of what was in those books.
  • The sensation of liquid running from nose, ears and throat — with no real liquid present.
  • Itching in the ears or nose with no physical cause.
  • Unexpected yawning that has nothing to do with tiredness, arriving instead during moments of energetic activity.
  • A heaviness in the body that doesn’t respond to rest.
  • Difficulty maintaining sharp mental focus despite adequate sleep.
  • Vivid impressions during the night that dissolve before they can be grasped in the morning.
  • And one that particularly stopped me: the sensation of a lump in the throat that cannot be swallowed away, cannot be coughed out, simply sits there.

Consulting the Specialists — A Doctor and a Psychotherapist

Most doctors, when presented with this symptom and no structural cause, shrug. Both books listed it plainly, with an explanation: ectoplasm moving through the throat, or blocked there. Eighteen years of looking in the wrong direction.

Two books in a language I had to partially translate as I read, and suddenly the map made sense.

Then I found out that my ectoplasmic output ranked third on the entire campus — behind only the two main teachers.”You must have worked a lot with energies,” they kept saying. And yes — I had, in this life, through many years of work with kinesiology. But perhaps in other lifetimes too. These things may have long threads.

Some of the mystery remains, and I’m not in a hurry to resolve it prematurely.

What I do carry, unresolved and insistent, is a question that has followed me for fourteen years since that night in the van:

If we are given gifts to contribute

- what exactly am I meant to

contribute with that Ektoplasma thing?

That question takes us into the next part: the interviews, the bulldozer-effect, the car accident, what ectoplasm has to do with sex and what actually does it to the people who carry a lot of it.

Follow along — it gets stranger from here:
