Do I Have To Hate?

There is so much going on around the world right now that, if I allowed myself to, I would hate. But I don’t want to.

Between the greed, the apathy, and the sheer lack of human compassion, I could so easily just turn into a fiery ball of malice and act like those who hate, but I won’t.

The news keeps broadcasting reason after reason to widen the fault line between “us” and “them”, but my choice is to keep my peace.

The energy it takes to maintain disdain in my heart is not worth it. It’s exhausting. It’s not that I don’t care, that I’m callous, or unfeeling. Just the opposite. I have nothing but empathy for all of us who are hurting, that are feeling our lives being shaken to the core. It breaks my heart to see the animosity towards our neighbors broadcast from the highest office in the country. Watching as decades-long relationships with global friends and allies are decimated by petulance, greed, and ignorance makes me sick to my stomach. Not knowing what the next blow to our way of life will be is unnerving. The fear is real and would consume me, but I refuse to let it.

I value my inner peace more than I abhor the circumstances we are currently facing. It is a tough daily battle, to be honest. To turn off and unplug from the chaos is the only way I have found to control the influx of bad news. I have to for my own sanity.

I cannot control what others do or say. I do, however, get to choose how I react. Do I have to hate? No! I choose not to. I choose to maintain my peace.
