Padres Roster Moves, 9/2/14

Major League rosters expanded from 25 to 40-man yesterday with the start of September.

The team announced four roster moves yesterday and several more today.

Here are today’s roster moves:

• Recalled RHP Joe Wieland from Triple-A El Paso
• Recalled LHP Frank Garces from Double-A San Antonio
• Selected RHP R.J. Alvarez from Double-A San Antonio
• Selected C Adam Moore from Triple-A El Paso
• Recalled INF Ryan Jackson from Triple-A El Paso and placed on the 60-day disabled list
• Reinstated INF Chris Nelson from the paternity leave list and designated for assignment
• Reinstated LHP Troy Patton from the 60-day disabled list and designated for assignment

Wieland, 24, will be making his first Major League appearance since making five starts for the Padres from April 14th — May 6th, 2012. His season was cut short by having “Tommy John” surgery. He has made nine minor league starts since returning to baseball on July 19th and posted a 2–3 record with a 3.03 ERA.

This will be the second Major League stint for Garces after having his contract purchased from Double-A San Antonio on August 19th.

Alvarez who was acquired on July 18th in the five-player trade that sent RHP Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels will be making his major League debut in his first appearance with the Padres.

Moore will be making his Padres debut and his first Major League stint since appearing in five games for the Kansas City Royals from May 26th- June 1st of last season.

With today’s transactions the Padres currently have 33 active players and a full 40-man roster.
