The park had changed again. Even in daylight, shadows lingered longer than they should. Branches twisted unnaturally, and leaves whispered as if speaking in voices only Jake could hear. Every step he took felt watched.

The mailbox waited under the gnarled tree, rusted and still, but alive with expectation. Another note slid into his hands: “The hunters are near. You must stay careful.”

Jake’s stomach churned. Shapes moved just beyond the edges of his vision, shifting, stretching, watching. He could feel eyes on him from every dark corner of the park. The isolation that once felt eerie now felt suffocating.

He knelt by the mailbox, scribbling quickly, desperately. Each letter he wrote formed a fragile barrier against the shadows. His hand trembled. Every word mattered.

A sudden rustle behind the bushes made him jump. He spun, but there was nothing, only fog curling around the roots. Then a faint whisper, too soft to understand, seemed to hiss his name. Goosebumps ran down his arms.

Another note appeared inside the mailbox. This one was heavier, the paper cold to the touch. Its message was simple yet terrifying: “They are watching every move. Trust no one but me.”

Jake’s heart pounded. He knew the hunters were patient. They waited for hesitation, for fear, for a pause. One slip, and the shadows would strike.

He noticed footprints near the mailbox, faint and shifting, like something had walked there in the night, leaving no clear path. Every time he looked away, shapes seemed to bend closer, almost alive, almost hungry.

The wind picked up, carrying whispers that slithered around his ears. Jake shivered. The park was no longer just a place of trees and rusted benches. It had become a realm where shadows hunted, and the mailbox was the only tether to life.

He clutched his notebook tighter. Fear tried to overwhelm him, but he forced himself to focus. Every letter he wrote was a shield. Every reply from Sara guided him. He had to stay vigilant, or the hunters would find a way in.

As he left the park, he glanced back. The mailbox waited silently, patient, knowing. And somewhere in the shifting shadows, the hunters lingered, watching, waiting, relentless.

Jake understood now that survival was fragile. Every moment counted. Every word mattered. And the danger was closer than ever.
