Apprenticeship Program at Pernix: Learning by Being Thrown Into the Real World

The last two weeks of the apprenticeship felt very different from the first ones. Earlier, the focus was on understanding the culture, values, and how things work, and now, it feels like stepping into the real rhythm of the company; not just observing, but actually participating.

One of the biggest parts of these weeks was pairing/shadowing with the company developers across many different projects; where each session felt like opening a small window into a completely different world, because I was able to learn from different tech stacks, different challenges and different ways of thinking. Some sessions were about debugging real production issues, others about understanding workflows, reviewing pull requests, learning how teams coordinate, or seeing how large systems are structured.

I was surprised with the amount of new information coming, showing me how much you can learn just by watching how someone approaches a problem, and not only the technical side, but how they think, prioritize, explain decisions, and deal with complexity, giving me the sensation of being part of a mini masterclass.

At the beginning, it was a bit overwhelming, with so many tools, platforms, and concepts being mentioned constantly, but after a few days, that feeling slowly started turning into curiosity, focusing on understanding how people navigate uncertainty, instead of trying to understand everything.

Another important milestone for me was having the first contact with a real client related to the project I was assigned. It was mostly presentations and understanding scope, however, it made everything make sense and feel more real, like “ This is not just training anymore, these systems exist”, realizing people depend on them, and decisions actually matter, bringing to me a mix of excitement and responsibility.

Beside that, I worked on building a TicTacToe project using Scrum and structured development practices. What made it interesting was not the game itself (I had already built similar things before) but the process, by writing user stories, working in sprints, creating pull requests, fixing reviews, iterating step by step; I was forced to slow down and build things the “professional way”, not just the fastest way. That shift in mindset has been one of the most important lessons so far.

I also spent time configuring local development environments for the project we will start working on next week, setting up Docker containers, and preparing the project backend. These moments were both frustrating and rewarding; there’s something strangely satisfying about finally getting a system to run after struggling with configuration issues for long time, and makes you appreciate the invisible work that exists behind the development environments.

If I had to describe these two weeks in one sentence, I would say:

“I stopped feeling like someone preparing to become a developer, and started feeling like someone who is already part of a development environment, still learning, but actively inside it.”

There is still a lot I don’t understand (probably more than I realize), but instead of feeling intimidating, knowing how much there is to grow into, technically, professionally, and personally feels motivating,.

And this make me genuinely excited for what comes next.
