I Thought I Missed Him — I Was Just Missing Closure

On love, limerence, and the quiet freedom of letting go

I didn’t miss him.

I missed the version of the story where things ended differently.

For a long time, I told myself I was holding on because of love. But the truth was quieter than that. And harder to admit.

I wasn’t in love anymore. I was attached to an unfinished ending.

All my life, I’ve been someone who sets goals and chases them. Even when it’s hard, even when it takes time — I stay.

And strangely, I’ve always found a kind of hidden joy in the process.

But every meaningful journey I’ve ever had shared one thing:

It required patience.

I’m better at that now. Still not perfect.

I still rush sometimes. Still want things to unfold faster than they’re meant to.

But maybe this is the real truth:

Learning patience… requires patience.

It asks me not to push myself harshly, but to meet myself with compassion instead.

There’s another pattern I’ve been working through: letting go.

I’ve let go of many painful experiences in my life. And not just let go — I’ve replaced them with better ones.

But there was one story that didn’t follow that pattern.

The story of rejection.

Why was this one different?

Why did this one leave a space that nothing seemed to fill?

I think I know the answer now.

Because I never got to prove to myself — through my own experience — that love could feel safe, mutual, and real.

In every other area of my life, pain was eventually replaced by something better.

Here, there was no replacement.

Just… emptiness.

But something changed.

The fear is gone.

That space that once felt tight and overwhelming — no longer belongs to fear.

And that matters more than I can explain.

Because I remember what it used to feel like:

The pressure in my chest. The ache that reached my fingertips.

And now?

It’s almost completely gone.

Healing is a quiet miracle.

You don’t always notice it while it’s happening. But one day, you realize:

What once consumed you… barely touches you anymore.

So I need to be honest with myself.

Waiting for him isn’t love.

It’s the desire to rewrite the story.

To finally be understood. To finally be chosen. To finally “get it right.”

But that story is over.

And not every story is meant to be rewritten.

Some are meant to be left exactly where they ended.

I was one of the main characters in that story.

But I’m no longer living in that world.

And if I’m honest?

There’s nothing left there for me.

No new lesson. No hidden meaning. No version of that story that sets me free.

Only something that pulls me backwards.

And yet…

My mind still tries.

It creates conversations that never happened. Scenes that don’t exist.

Psychologists have a word for it: limerence.

But at its core, it’s simple:

It’s me trying to prove something.

“Look at me.” “See my life.” “See how I’m loved.” “See what you missed.”

But here’s the truth I’m finally accepting:

I don’t need to prove anything to someone who didn’t choose me.

Maybe it was never about me.

Maybe he wasn’t my person.

And I wasn’t his.

Maybe what he wanted from life… simply wasn’t me.

And for the first time, I’m not trying to change that.

Not trying to analyze it. Not trying to make it make sense.

Just… accepting it.

Because some questions don’t have answers.

And no matter how many scenarios I create, I will never truly know how things could have been.

Maybe I’ll see him again one day. Maybe I won’t.

Maybe he’ll fall in love with someone else. Build a life. Start a family.

Maybe he already has.

And yes — it’s possible that right now, I’m writing about someone who is making another woman happy.

And still…

I’m okay.

Because life was never meant to be fully known.

That’s the beauty of it.

Living — especially being young — means living with uncertainty.

With surprise. With the unknown.

So what do I choose now?

I choose to trust.

To believe that what is meant for me will find me at the right time.

I choose gratitude. For what I already have.

I choose to build a life that doesn’t revolve around being chosen.

I will dream. I will learn. I will explore.

I will create a life that feels like mine.

And maybe that’s what letting go really is:

Not replacing the story. Not fixing the ending.

But no longer needing it.

If you’ve ever struggled to let go without closure, I hope you know this:

You don’t need their explanation to find your peace.

Sometimes, peace begins the moment you stop asking why.

And finally, to myself:

Enjoy your life.

Truly.
