How to Listen Like a Leader

The Skill That Most People Overrate but Everyone Notices

Most people believe they’re great listeners. That belief is adorable… and statistically false.

Studies show that the average person listens at only 25% efficiency. In workplace conversations, we get distracted every 8 seconds, and 64% of employees say they don’t feel heard by their managers. Listening isn’t a soft skill — it’s a strategic one.

Several years ago I had a supervisor who listened WHILE he was doing something else — checking his phone, working on papers on his desk. Rude, irritating, and he never HEARD what I was saying causing many problems at work. SO I dedicate this article to George in hopes that he will change for his current staff.

So why is listening so hard?

1. We Listen to Respond, Not to Understand

During conversations, the brain is already preparing its next sentence while the other person is talking.

Neuroscientists call this “mental preloading,” and it hijacks presence. You’re technically there… just not with the person.

Listening starts when the ego sits down.

2. The Nervous System Leads the Conversation

Communication is mostly nonverbal — tone accounts for 38%, and body language 55% of how your message lands.

When your nervous system is tense, you hear less, miss subtle cues, and react faster than you intend.

Regulate first. Respond second.

3. The Pause is Your Superpower

The average person can speak 125 words per minute… …but can think about 800.

The pause gives your brain time to catch up — and the other person space to feel valued.

4. Questions Are the Shortcut to Connection

Good listeners aren’t silent — they’re curious. Great questions signal safety. Safety opens honesty.

Try:

  • “Can you say more about that?”
  • “What feels most important here?”
  • “What do you need from me right now?”

Listening Is the New Leadership Currency

In a world obsessed with speaking, the person who listens stands out. People trust you. People open up. People follow you.

If you want to lead better, sell better, parent better, or partner better — start by becoming someone worth talking to.
