What is your love language?

“How do you express your love to your loved one?”

The author Gary Chapman came up with 5 types of love languages, which describes the different ways people tend to express and receive love. If you are new to love then you might find it helpful in understanding your relationship.

  1. Words of Affirmation: means feeling loved through either spoken or written words. For example, “I am proud of you”, “You are really good at what you do”, “I appreciate everything you do” etc. It includes compliments, words of encouragement, sweet text, or even handwritten letters or notes.

  1. Acts of Service: means feeling loved when someone does helpful things for you without even you needing to ask for it. For example, making your favourite meal, buying your favourite snack, fixing something around the house simply because you know it would make their day easier.

  1. Giving Gifts: means feeling loved through thoughtful gifts. For example, a handmade gift made with love, bringing a souvenir from a trip which reminds them about you, giving flowers, chocolates or something which you wanted from a really long time. What matters most is the thought, care, and effort behind the gift—not its price.

Personally, I express my love by making handmade gifts, buying things that my partner has wanted for a long time, going for walks on the beach together, having meaningful conversations, playing games with him, hugging him, holding his hand, taking care of him, sharing meals, spending time together and what not.

However, love thrives when efforts are made from both sides. Some of the things I appreciate most about him are the little things he does for me. He feeds me without ever complaining, makes my favorite dishes, and if I say I only want one piece of my favorite cake, he buys me two. He remembers the smallest details about my life, asks about me my day, reminds me of things I need to do, and always makes me feel cared for.

At the end of the day, love is found in the little things. It is about being thoughtful, making consistent efforts, communicating openly, respecting each other, and caring for one another. These small acts of love are what truly strengthen a relationship.
