Mi So and Ha Eun — Soulmates

Mi-So and Ha Eun meet each other at the age of 13. They become friends because one is so like the other and other is also not. Going into the film, I thought it would be a woman-love-woman romance. It was woman-love-woman.. just not romance, something much better than that. They were soulmates.

I didn’t think a movie could break me, but this one really did.

Mi-So and Ha-Eun look after each other, they complete each other. They weren’t perfect. They had their spats, they had resentment, they had secrets, they had fears, and there did come a point when we were sure, they would not make it.

Mi-So kissed Ha-Eun’s lover. During the scene, I knew this was something that would be a hamartia in their relationship. There was no confrontation or confession. They simply drifted apart. When they get back from the trek with Ha-Eun on the cycle with her boyfriend and Mi-So on her scooter, they look at each other as if they were seeing each other for the last time. As a matter of fact, they did see the versions of themselves, the one from the root of the friendship till now, fading away into something else.

Deep down, they started to hate each other, for who they were and for who they have become. They fell apart, like star-crossed lovers, little by little.

No one, no one, could understand them, the way they did to each other. They went on to live their lives, Ha-Eun doing everything that she was expected of, and Mi-So doing everything she told she would do. Either of their lives weren’t perfect but they did make it seem like to each other. Mi-So became a starving artist trying to make ends meet in Europe and Ha-Eun becoming a teacher, instead of artist, and heading towards aisle.

When they both meet each other, in between all this, they do relive the fun and freeness they had with each other. To some extent. Their struggles and resentment comes up. There is still no confrontation, about why is Mi-So wearing Ha-Eun’s lover’s necklace, nor about the fact that Ha-Eun saw Mi-So kissing him and was aware of these feelings all along. They simply exploded, and went seperate ways.

Ha-Eun was at the aisle, when she realised she never truly lived for herself. Leaving him at the altar, Ha-Eun follows Mi-So’s footsteps by living at the same place Mi-So did when she first left the town. She too, picked up the brush and started to paint.

Month’s later she meets Mi-So at her business class. This is where the biggest plot twist arrives. Something that breaks my heart every time I think of it. Mi-So does not tell a single soul, what actually went down at that meeting. And if we really think of it, we can see why. Ha-Eun came to her because there was no person in the world she would come to with who she was and Mi-So.. well Mi-So loved her just as much.
