Day 355: The city of the thousand and one nights — Merv, Turkmenistan

Tukmenistan is full of archeological and geological wonders. Having had the privilege to spend a little time there, these memories will stay forever engraved in my brain as the most astonishing of the countries I visited.

In the hotels, it seems that the employees don’t care whether or not they have tourists. They have a fixed job, a salary at the end of the month. These are government-owned hotels. That’s why, since we’ve returned to the cities, we see these empty buildings filled with idle employees waiting in front of the TV for something to happen, completely overwhelmed as soon as you dare to ask for a pot of coffee.

We had asked our guide if it would be possible to eat in a café with him, instead of in the restaurants. At our insistence, he took us there. Once off the main avenue, magnificently manicured, roses and gardens and fountains and octagons everywhere, we lost ourselves in the Soviet-era HLMs. Another face. Decaying roads, windows and gardens. The simple, miserable lives of people crammed into towers with tiny rooms, where the world seems to enter only via Russian broadcasts. On the buildings, green LEDs broadcast slogans extolling the beauty of the president, what he said, the greatness of the country.

This morning, we visited ancient Merv. The city that inspired The Thousand and One Nights. A splendor of a few buildings stretching for square kilometers, where Turkmen, young and old, come on pilgrimage to ask for a better life, children and work. A tradition that endures even though it is not authorized by the Koran.

A group of young teenagers from the same village ask if they can take a photo of us. We take a group photo, happy to be together for this brief moment. A young girl approaches us in unaccented English. A school group, girls aged 8 to 10, accompanied by a boy and an English teacher. They join us later in the mausoleum to take our picture and continue chatting. Val shows them photos of Switzerland. The children exclaim, even the old teacher.”
