Safety Car sparks controversy at the British GP finish

The British Grand Prix had almost everything Formula 1 fans could ask for. There were bold overtakes at the start, different strategy calls, mechanical issues, late-race drama and a Safety Car that changed how the race ended.

Charles Leclerc got the perfect launch when the lights went out. The Ferrari driver immediately took control of the race, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton also made a strong start to move ahead of Kimi Antonelli. Ferrari looked comfortable in the opening stint as Leclerc slowly built a gap at the front.

Antonelli wasn’t ready to settle for third, though. The Mercedes rookie fought his way back past Hamilton and moved into second, looking like the only driver with the pace to challenge Leclerc. As the race unfolded, he started reducing the gap and looked set to put Ferrari under pressure in the final stint.

However, that battle never really happened.

On Lap 41, Antonelli reported a problem with his car. Mercedes later suggested it was a failure of the left-front wheel shield, forcing the Italian into an extra pit stop. His race quickly unraveled as he dropped down the order, and things got even worse when he was handed a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

With Antonelli out of contention, Leclerc looked firmly in control. Hamilton was still in the fight behind him, while George Russell and Lando Norris continued to push through different strategies as the race entered its closing stages.

Then, with only a few laps remaining, everything changed again.

Max Verstappen spun off and hit the barriers, bringing out the Safety Car. It immediately became a strategy race once more.

Ferrari reacted by bringing both Leclerc and Hamilton into the pits for fresh soft tyres. Leclerc managed to rejoin still leading the race, but Hamilton lost valuable track position to George Russell, who stayed out and moved into second place.

At that point, the stage seemed perfectly set for one final lap of racing. Fresh tyres, three drivers fighting for the podium, and a packed Silverstone crowd waiting for a dramatic finish.

But that final lap never came.

Leclerc crossed the line behind the Safety Car to secure his ninth Formula 1 victory. Russell finished second after benefiting from the late strategy call, Hamilton completed the podium in third, while Lando Norris came home fourth.

So why didn’t the Safety Car come in?

As fans watched the closing laps, many noticed something strange.

The timing screens briefly displayed the message “Safety Car In This Lap,” which usually means the Safety Car will peel into the pits and racing will resume. Around the circuit, fans expected one final lap of wheel-to-wheel action, and television commentators began preparing for exactly that.

Just moments later, however, the message disappeared.

Instead of pulling into the pits, the Safety Car stayed out, and the race finished under yellow flags.

Race Control later confirmed that the “Safety Car In This Lap” message had been displayed accidentally because of a software issue. The message was quickly withdrawn once officials realised the race could not legally restart.

Under Formula 1 regulations, once lapped cars are allowed to overtake the Safety Car and rejoin the back of the field, one complete lap must pass before the Safety Car can return to the pits.

The unlapping process had only just been completed on the penultimate lap. That meant the required extra lap was actually the final lap of the race, leaving no opportunity for the Safety Car to come in and racing to resume before the chequered flag.

Many fans at Silverstone had already seen the restart message appear on the timing screens and believed they were about to witness one last showdown between Leclerc, Russell and Hamilton. Instead, they watched the field follow the Safety Car all the way to the finish.

The British Grand Prix delivered drama from the very first corner until the final lap. Ironically, though, the biggest talking point wasn’t Leclerc’s victory or Russell’s strategy, it was the ending that never happened.
