5 Things Every Adult Child Should Organize for Their Aging Parents Before an Emergency
When our parents are doing well, it’s easy to think there will always be time to organize the important things later.
But if Mom or Dad suddenly needs medical care, the questions can come quickly.
What medications are they taking? What are they allergic to? Who is their doctor? Where is their insurance information?
You don’t need to organize your parents’ entire life in one weekend.
Start with these five things.
1. A Complete Medication List
Write down their current medications and keep the information updated. Include important over-the-counter medicines and supplements where relevant.
Having this information together means one less thing to search for during a stressful moment.
2. Doctors and Important Contacts
Keep the names and contact information for their primary doctor, specialists, and important family or emergency contacts together.
The goal is simple: know who to call when you need them.
3. Insurance Information
Know where their current health insurance information and other important coverage documents are kept.
You don’t want the first time you look for these documents to be during an emergency.
4. Medical Conditions and Allergies
Create a simple record of known medical conditions and allergies so you aren’t trying to remember everything during a stressful situation.
Write it down. Keep it updated. Make sure the right family members know where it is.
5. Important Emergency Information
Decide where the family’s essential information will be kept and make sure the appropriate people know how to access it.
You don’t have to organize everything today.
Start with these five things.
Being prepared isn’t about expecting the worst.
It’s about making a difficult day a little easier if it ever comes.
That’s why I created Everything We Need for Mom & Dad — a printable family organizer designed to help families keep important information together instead of scattered across notebooks, drawers, phones, and different family members.
If you’ve been meaning to organize Mom or Dad’s important information, you can see the organizer here
