Prof. Dr. Gustavo Henrique Valente | Labor Data Completes the Domestic Dashboard

A macro dashboard is incomplete without the labor market.

Brazil enters today’s quarterly PNAD release after mixed domestic signals. July inflation slowed to 0.07% month over month and 4.44% over twelve months. June services slipped 0.2%, while June retail sales rose 0.5%. The latest monthly unemployment reading for the quarter ending in June was 5.4%.

These figures do not tell one simple story.

Retail resilience can support household demand. Softer services can point to uneven activity. Lower inflation can improve purchasing power. Labor data tell us whether those trends have enough income behind them to persist.

That is why I read employment through more than the unemployment rate.

I also want to know whether participation is rising, whether real income is improving, whether formal employment is broadening and whether underemployment is falling.

A low unemployment rate can coexist with weaker participation. Strong wages can support consumption, but they can also keep service inflation persistent.

For asset allocation, labor data connect several parts of the portfolio.

Income influences retail. Employment influences credit quality. Wage growth affects services inflation. Participation changes how we interpret unemployment.

Together, these variables shape expectations for monetary policy, company revenue and household resilience.

Artificial intelligence can help organize these relationships. A useful model can compare labor, retail, services, inflation and credit conditions and identify when signals are becoming more consistent.

But AI should not reduce labor data to a market call.

Its best role is to improve the quality of the questions.

For Brazil, the labor market completes the domestic dashboard because it connects economic activity to household capacity.

The headline tells us about employment conditions.

The structure tells us whether demand has durable income behind it.
