Quantum, agentic AI, and a desktop AI supercomputer

Microsoft Build 2026 just wrapped up, and the whole show was about one thing: building with AI agents. Less “here is a new app” and more “here is how your tools, your hardware, and your operating system are changing to put agents at the center.”
If you missed it, here is the short version: a desktop AI supercomputer, a new family of Microsoft models, an agent-first device platform, and a big jump in quantum. Let me walk you through what actually matters for developers.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box -> a personal AI supercomputer
This is the headline gadget. A compact developer box built on NVIDIA’s RTX Spark superchip (Grace CPU + Blackwell RTX GPU), with 128 GB of unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of AI compute on your desk. That is enough to run models over 120 billion parameters with a 1 million-token context window, fully local. It ships with Windows 11 Pro pre-configured for devs: WSL 2 with CUDA, VS Code, GitHub Copilot, Git, Python, and Node.js out of the box.
Windows becomes an agent platform
Microsoft turned Windows 11 into a home for AI agents. The big additions: Coreutils for Windows (Linux-style console tools), WSL Containers, an Intelligent Terminal that understands agents, Windows Developer Configurations for one-shot environment setup, and Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), a new isolation layer so agents and AI apps can run safely. OpenAI, NVIDIA, Manus, and OpenClaw are all plugging into MXC.
Project Solara -> devices that run on agents, not apps
A new hardware + software platform for gadgets that operate on AI agents instead of traditional apps, managed by the MDEP operating system. The clever part is Just-in-time UI: the AI generates and resizes the interface for any screen on its own. Microsoft showed two concepts, a wearable Badge for mobile workers and a desktop Desk companion, with pilots coming at CVS Health, Best Buy, and Target.
Seven new MAI models
Mustafa Suleyman’s Microsoft AI team launched a fresh model family: MAI-Thinking-1 for reasoning, MAI-Code-1-Flash for coding and Copilot, MAI-Image-2.5, MAI-Transcribe-1.5, and MAI-Voice-2 (natural voice in 15 languages). They also introduced Frontier Tuning, a way for companies to fine-tune models directly on their own workflows and data.
The agent ecosystem -> Scout, IQ, and open governance
Microsoft also leaned hard into agents that act on your behalf. The standouts:
- Microsoft Scout: an always-on personal work agent across Teams, Outlook, and M365 that learns your priorities and follows through, available first to Copilot Frontier users.
- Microsoft IQ (GA): a unified context layer that feeds agents real knowledge, now generally available across Copilot, Foundry, and Copilot Studio. It pulls Work IQ (M365 signals), Fabric IQ (business data), and the new Web IQ (fast, MCP-native web grounding).
- Agent Control Specification (ACS): an open, portable way to govern agents on any framework, anchored together with ASSERT in an Open Trust Stack so agents can be trusted by design.
Developer and data tools
A few more pieces that matter if you ship for a living:
- GitHub Copilot App: a native desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux) built for running agents in parallel, with Interactive, Plan, and Autopilot modes, plus mobile handoff.
- Microsoft Foundry: the agentic platform for building, running, and scaling AI, now with serverless agentic retrieval and agent memory.
- Azure Cobalt 200 VMs: roughly 50% performance gains for modern agentic workloads.
- Azure HorizonDB: a Postgres-compatible operational database built for the AI era, in public preview.
- GPU-accelerated Microsoft Fabric: up to 7x faster queries on NVIDIA.
The new Majorana 2 topological quantum processor swaps aluminum for a lead-based material stack. The result: qubit stability up more than 1,000x, qubit lifetimes jumping from milliseconds to over 20 seconds, with some individual qubits holding for over a minute. Microsoft now expects a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
