My Garden: Sekka Enishida

Broom is a plant known for its small, butterfly-like flowers.

Most people associate it with yellow flowers, but the sekka enishida used in floral arrangements can also produce delicate white blooms.

What draws me to sekka enishida is not the flower, but the branch.

Instead of growing straight, the stem flattens, bends, and twists.

Each line moves differently, giving the green a quiet but unmistakable character.

Each stem has its own curve and wavering form

The movement is almost sculptural.

Although sekka enishida carries a strong Japanese impression,

I wanted to place it in a light, Western-style space.

Not by erasing its character,

but by letting its lines breathe differently.

Materials used

• Chrysanthemum ‘Manoa’
• Pink spray chrysanthemum
• Delphinium ‘Grand Blue’
• Delphinium ‘Blue Perfume’
• Dracaena ‘Godseffiana’

The branches spread in flat, rippling lines.

By adding the blue of delphinium,

those lines begin to rise lightly through the space.
