First Day Onboard Working on a Cruise Ship: The Chaos, the Tears and the Memories.

Nobody warns you about the exciting trap you’re about to step into — the overwhelming day that will shape you in ways land life never could. Welcome to your first day working on a cruise ship!

Early in the morning, a shuttle will pick you up from your hotel. If you’re a concessionaire, you’ll need to book your own taxi to the home port. As soon as you arrive, the documentation process begins: paperwork, trainings, your name tag, room key, and safety card (I’ll explain more about that in the next post). Take a seat and get comfortable — the most exhausting day of your contract has just begun.

Your morning will be filled with trainings: code of conduct, onboard expectations, safety and security, environmental procedures, basic firefighting, norovirus prevention, and more. Then your manager will show you around and introduce you to your work area. Don’t worry if you get lost or forget everything — it’s normal.

After a quick lunch, you’ll finally see your cabin, drop your luggage, unpack a little, and… start working. Yes, your shift begins the very same day you embark. By now, you won’t fully realize where you are or what’s happening. You’ll just switch into “automatic mode,” following instructions and learning at a speed you never imagined. You’ll hear words you’ve never heard before (welcome to “ship language”) and wonder what on earth you’ve gotten yourself into.

If you’re lucky, your manager will train you directly. More often, though, it’s a kind colleague who takes pity on you and helps out — because the expectation is that you already know everything from day one.

You’ll feel lost. It’s normal. You’ll feel overwhelmed. It’s normal. You’ll see everyone running around like headless chickens. That’s normal too — it’s embarkation day.

By the end of the day, you’ll be exhausted, questioning your decision, maybe even regretting it a little. But here’s the truth: if you make it through the first two weeks, you’ll realize you made one of the best choices of your life.

Welcome to your first day onboard. Yes, you might cry. Yes, you won’t understand half of what’s happening. And yes, your feet will ache like never before. But you’ll forget all of that once your life onboard starts filling up with unforgettable memories.

And just when you think you survived, the next day brings your safety exam. Everyone wonders, “When am I supposed to study?” Don’t worry — your brain will be running at full speed. Even 30 minutes of study will be enough to pass. The real learning comes little by little, every day.
