Institutes do this work for courts, banks, insurers and estates; establishing whether a will was written by the person whose name is on it, whether a page was altered after it was signed. Your handwriting is unique enough to identify you. Not approximately. Specifically.

Why writing gives you away

Handwriting looks simple but is not. It is one of the more demanding things a human body does routinely.

The act engages around a dozen distinct regions of the brain, tangled up with spelling, reading, motor planning, and the interface between movement and language. And it is not only the hand. The arm moves. The other hand stabilises. The shoulders carry the arm, the torso holds the shoulders, the legs hold the torso, and the neck positions the head so the eyes can supervise the whole business.

The whole body writes. The hand just gets the credit.

Layer on top of that a finding from brain imaging: activation patterns during writing differ slightly from one person to the next. Which produces the result the examiners depend on. Your handwriting is the visible output of a movement pattern that is yours, learned over years, stored in the part of you that handles practiced motion, and therefore very hard to forge, and surprisingly hard to disguise even deliberately.

That last part is worth pausing on. You cannot easily stop being identifiable by your own hand. It is not a habit you can drop.

What paper forgot

For eight thousand years this did not matter very much, because the medium was so bad at remembering.

Paper holds a residue. An indentation, a variation in ink density, the aftermath of a movement that finished and was gone. Everything a document examiner does with a physical page is reconstruction: skilled, painstaking, and always after the fact. It also requires the physical page. No page, no evidence.

So handwriting was identifying in principle and mostly harmless in practice. It gave you away only when someone went looking, on a document they physically held, with an expert and a reason.

A pen on a screen changes both halves of that.

Consider what a digital pen records while you write. Position, continuously. Pressure, continuously. The angle of the barrel. Speed and acceleration. The order of the strokes. The moments when the tip left the surface and where it came back down. How long you paused, and exactly where.

It does not reconstruct the movement afterwards. It was there.

This is genuinely good news for anyone who cares about handwriting. It means the digital version can be richer than paper ever was, verifiable in ways a scanned signature never will be, and useful for things paper could not do at all, from diagnosing writing difficulties in children to authenticating a document without a courier.

It also means something less comfortable, which the industry discusses less often.

The standards that exist, and the ones that do not

If a pen captures enough to prove that a will is genuine, it captures enough to recognise the person holding it.

Not their name. Their hand. The thing they cannot easily stop doing.

So when a bank captures your signature on a tablet, a great deal has already been decided about what that data is and how it may be handled.

Now consider the shopping list.

You write it in a note-taking app, with the same pen, on the same device. The capture is identical, position, pressure, tilt, timing. What it reveals about you is identical. And none of those frameworks apply, because nobody set out to identify anyone. It was a shopping list.

That is the actual gap. Not that these questions have never been asked, but that they were asked about the case where identification is the purpose, and never about the far more common case where it is a by-product.

Which is where a format stops being a technical convenience. What a pen records, how long it is kept, and who may read it back has to be written down somewhere that outlasts the company that made the app.

Eight thousand years of leaving traces

You have been carrying this fingerprint your whole life, and leaving it on everything you have ever written.

The difference is simply that paper forgot almost all of it, and screens do not have to forget anything at all.

That is not a loss. It is the first time in eight thousand years that the choice has actually been ours to make.

The only question is whether we make it on purpose.
