Brief Overview of the New MGU-NOTIS-03-servo

The innovation lies in the fact that the transverse sealing heater drive now operates solely on a servo drive. This comes after many years of innovative solutions in controlling cost-effective asynchronous motor-reducers. We have increased productivity by 40% (250→350 bpm), improved operational accuracy, and enhanced the reliability of the drive mechanisms.

Let us recall the beginnings of NOTIS flow-pack packaging machines’ production. In what ways did they surpass their competitors? What high-tech features have enhanced the reliability and productivity of the machines?

MGU-NOTIS-01

2004–2011: First in Russia

Exactly 20 years ago, at the RosUpak-2004 exhibition, our company introduced the first horizontal packaging machine in Russia, the MGU-NOTIS-01. To conquer the market, we needed to offer a unique advantage. Our flow-pack machine became the first in Russia equipped with independent electric drives, greatly enhancing equipment reliability and simplifying the adjustment from one product to another.

Independent Drives

Our facility is located just 10 kilometers from the largest scientific center in Siberia. This proximity has endowed NOTIS with a strong design bureau team from the outset, characterized by unique methods and a fresh perspective. True to our Siberian roots, we embrace unconventional solutions that achieve goals with minimal expenditure. Yet, a fundamental rule in the Siberian character is to ensure that whatever we do, we do it thoroughly and reliably.

The first horizontal packaging machine by NOTIS already featured only independent electric drives, without any mechanical connections such as chains or other elements. In general, minimal mechanics were employed, which is typically a weak point in any automatic system. This achievement became possible thanks to advanced developments in electronics and control algorithms. NOTIS horizontal packaging machines operated on regular, yet independent electric drives, as efficient and reliable as expensive servo drives.

Different drives such as conveyor, film draw, and sealing jaws are controlled by a single controller based on phase and speed. The system automatically sets the speed ratio and phase of movement of the mechanisms relative to each other.

The solution with independent drives provided key advantages:

• Reliability: There are no mechanical transmissions between the drives such as chains, sprockets, or universal joints. This is inherently more reliable than single-motor counterparts with a set of transmission sprockets, chains, variators, and electromagnetic clutches. In the control cabinet of any NOTIS horizontal machine, there are only electronic blocks. Moreover, all components are repairable since all electronics are produced in-house.
• Quick changeover in less than 3 minutes: All drives are controlled by a single controller based on speed and phase. You set the bag length, and the system automatically adjusts the speed ratio and phase of movement of the mechanisms. This ensures precise sealing and accurate positioning of the product inside the package. In single-motor machines, one has to adjust the speeds and phases of the feed conveyor, film movement mechanism, and cross knives separately.

Reliability from the very first machine.

NOTIS service tracks the history of each product to identify weak points and improvements. We periodically publish interesting results of spare parts analysis, especially when ordering consumables for machines over 15 years old. For example, in 2017, for that very MGU-NOTIS from 2004 with serial number №0001, we received an order for a set of letters for a thermodecoder. We replaced it and continued working.

Improvement

Company NOTIS motto: Innovation and continuous improvement. Every year, we introduce changes to the design and software. In the early years, we actively updated firmware for already sold machines to improve performance and eliminate teething problems. By 2006, the machine acquired a modern design with more compact dimensions. A year later, independent experts already highlighted the originality of ideas in the first-generation MGU-NOTIS (Unipack: Whose horizon is better?). Then came the packaging machine with bottom film feeding, designed for packaging products with unstable shapes or consisting of multiple parts.

MGU-NOTIS-02

2012–2018: High Efficiency

In 2012, at the “Agroprodmash” exhibition, we introduced the MGU-NOTIS-02 featuring a color touchscreen, updated electronics, and a powerful processor, similar to those used in modern smartphones. The machine’s operation became smooth and synchronous even at high speeds. For instance, for packaging ice cream, we achieved a speed of 200 pieces per minute.

For small products, the machine consistently maintained a cruising speed of 250 pieces per minute. This caught the attention of several chocolate factories in Russia. In 2014, NOTIS engineers developed and installed a fully automated packaging line for candies and bars. Our complex adapted to the production line speed, distributed flows to multiple packaging machines, and provided contactless product feeding for gentle preservation of its shape. 250 candies per minute is quite a high speed. Thus, we have matched the specifications of expensive packaging machines with servo drives with ours — using ordinary asynchronous drives.

MSU-NOTIS-03-Servo

From 2023: New level

In 2019, MGU-NOTIS-03 appeared, so far without the servo prefix. The name update came after a number of significant improvements in the control system, introduction of all sorts of options, splicer technology (see demonstration on youtube). As in the previous generation, all drives were independent and based on inexpensive asynchronous gearmotors

At the end of 2023, we unveiled the latest generation of MGU-NOTIS-03-servo. The new machine is distinguished by the fact that the third drive for the cross sealing jaws is now exclusively built on servo drive technology. This has allowed for an increase in speed, thanks to the precision of the cutting process. On the same candies, the machine achieves a cruising speed of 350 packs per minute, with the potential to accelerate up to 400. And, of course, the new solution has enhanced the reliability of the drive mechanisms.
