Feeling Stressed About Money?

Your Body May Be Holding the Answer

“Your body is not the enemy. It’s the messenger.” — Evelyn Foreman

What Is Financial Anxiety (And Why It’s Not Just in Your Head)

If you’ve ever opened your bank app and felt your stomach drop… If you’ve ever stood at the checkout counter, silently praying your card won’t decline… Or if you’ve ever avoided opening a bill because your chest tightens and your breath disappears —

That’s not just stress. That’s your nervous system speaking.

And no, you’re not broken. You’re not weak. You’re not irresponsible.

You’re having a biological and energetic response to a lifetime of financial wounding.

A client once told me:

“I felt ridiculous crying over a $65 bill. But my body just went numb — I couldn’t breathe. I closed my laptop and lay on the floor like I was bracing for impact.”

That moment wasn’t really about the bill. It was her nervous system remembering the nights her single mother sobbed at the kitchen table with stacks of unopened envelopes.

In my decades of supporting women in transition — mothers rebuilding after divorce, professionals burning out from overgiving, caretakers trying to hold it all together — I’ve witnessed a deep truth:

Money stress doesn’t just live in the mind. It lives in the body.

It changes the way you breathe. It changes the way you sleep. It changes how you relate — to others, and most painfully, to yourself.

Many of us try to “think” our way out of money anxiety. We repeat affirmations. We download another budgeting app. We try to stay positive.

But underneath the surface, our nervous system is still in a full-body panic — bracing for the next emergency, waiting for the next shoe to drop, convinced that safety is always just out of reach.

Why? Because **money shadows aren’t just beliefs. They’re **somatic imprints — stored in your muscles, breath, and heartbeat.

That moment you overheard “We can’t afford that” as a child? The shame you felt for asking for something you needed? The helplessness after losing a job?

Your body remembers — and protects you the only way it knows how.

So if you find yourself procrastinating on bills, undercharging for your work, or feeling shame just thinking about money — please know: this isn’t a mindset issue.

It’s a nervous system issue. It’s a soul issue.

And until we tend to both the body and the spirit — not just the mind — we’ll keep looping through the same cycles of scarcity and self-doubt.

But here’s the good news: once you understand this, you unlock the door to real healing. Not a quick fix. Not another spreadsheet.

A deep, embodied restoration of your inner safety and sovereignty.

From that grounded place, your relationship with money begins to shift — because when you’re no longer hijacked by fear, you can finally make clear, conscious, and courageous financial choices.

This is the sacred work of reclaiming your power. And you don’t have to do it alone.

The Link Between Money Trauma and the Nervous System

Let’s start with this truth: **Money trauma is real.**

You don’t need to have lived through bankruptcy or homelessness to carry money trauma. Trauma isn’t about the event itself — it’s about how your nervous system experienced and stored it. And for many of us, that experience started early.

You may be living with the embodied residue of:

Growing up in a household where money was scarce, unstable, or the source of tension and shame

Experiencing job loss, housing insecurity, or periods of financial uncertainty

Watching caregivers argue over bills or use money as a tool of control or manipulation

Absorbing limiting beliefs repeated like gospel:

  • “We can’t afford that.”
  • “Money is the root of all evil.”
  • “People like us never get ahead.”
  • “You have to work hard for every penny.”

These aren’t just words. They are imprints.

Each time you heard or felt those messages, your body was learning:

The world is not safe. Money is not safe. I am not safe.

How This Shows Up Later in Life

Fast forward to adulthood. You’re doing your best to create a stable life. Maybe you’ve even done some inner work. And yet…

  • Your stomach tightens when you check your bank account.
  • You freeze when it’s time to raise your prices or talk about money.
  • You feel shame when an unexpected expense hits.
  • You hustle, overspend, under-earn, or avoid money altogether.

Why? Because your nervous system is responding to money not as a neutral tool — but as a threat.

This isn’t your fault. It’s not a mindset problem.

It’s a biological pattern encoded in your body.

The Neurobiology of Financial Triggers

When you encounter a modern financial stressor — say, an unexpected bill or a low balance alert — your amygdala (the fear center of the brain) activates. It doesn’t know the difference between a past memory and a present reality. To your nervous system, that credit card statement might as well be a tiger.

Your body floods with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. You might notice:

  • Shallow breathing
  • Tension in your chest or jaw
  • Racing thoughts
  • Avoidant behavior or overreaction

This is not weakness. It’s your nervous system trying to protect you — using outdated wiring.

How Scarcity Is Stored in the Body

Money trauma lives in the body as felt sense: constriction, collapse, tension, numbness. That’s why traditional financial advice (“Just make a budget!” or “Think positive!”) often falls flat. If your body doesn’t feel safe, no amount of spreadsheets will shift your relationship with money.

This is why healing your money story must go deeper — to the roots.

Here’s what I see in clients over and over again:

  • Shoulders hunched forward = carrying burdens and shame
  • Breath held tight = trying not to feel or be too much
  • Gut tension = hypervigilance and fear of not having enough
  • Throat constriction = suppressed truth and self-expression

These aren’t coincidences. They’re the body’s protective adaptations — ways you’ve learned to survive financial unpredictability, criticism, or invisibility.

And here’s the kicker: These patterns don’t go away by ignoring them. They go away by listening.

This Is a Spiritual Issue, Too

Money trauma doesn’t just block prosperity — it disconnects you from your own worth, sovereignty, and divine connection to Source.

When we carry unresolved money trauma, we unconsciously contract around receiving. We dim our light, doubt our value, and limit what we believe is possible. It’s not because we don’t want abundance. It’s because, deep down, we don’t feel safe to receive it.

To heal, we must retrain the nervous system and restore spiritual trust — one breath, one choice, one safe step at a time.

Common Nervous System Patterns Behind Money Struggles

Understanding how the nervous system reacts to perceived money danger is a game-changer.

🔥 Fight Response:

  • You overwork, grind, and hustle to “beat” scarcity
  • You feel angry when expenses arise or others don’t pull their weight
  • You might argue about money or control spending tightly

❄️ Flight Response:

  • You avoid opening bills, checking your account, or thinking about money
  • You busy yourself with work or caretaking to distract from financial fear
  • You often say “I’ll deal with it later”

🧊 Freeze Response:

  • You feel numb, dissociated, or shut down around money topics
  • You don’t take action, even when you know what to do
  • You say things like “What’s the point?” or “It’s hopeless”

🫶 Fawn Response:

  • You give too much, undercharge, or stay in draining jobs or relationships out of fear of not being liked
  • You feel guilty asking for what you deserve
  • You confuse self-worth with self-sacrifice

Can you see how these responses are not flaws? They’re your nervous system trying to protect you from pain.

But protection isn’t the same as prosperity.

Healing Begins with Awareness and Compassion

When you feel dysregulated around money, pause.

Instead of forcing yourself to “get over it,” try this:

  • Name the trigger. (“This bill is activating a fear response.”)
  • Breathe. (Long, slow exhales help signal safety to the body.)
  • Ground. (Touch something solid. Feel your feet on the floor.)
  • Speak safety. (“This is hard, but I am not in danger. I am safe now.”)

This is the start of nervous system reprogramming — where your body begins to learn that money doesn’t have to mean danger anymore.

How Shadow Work Helps Heal Your Relationship with Money

Shadow work is the process of bringing awareness to the hidden, suppressed, or unhealed parts of ourselves — so they no longer unconsciously run the show.

When we apply shadow work to money, we ask:

  • What did I learn about money growing up that I’ve never questioned?
  • What am I afraid will happen if I have (or don’t have) money?
  • What part of me sabotages my financial goals, and why?

The answers often lead us back to:

  • A scared little girl who was told she was “too expensive”
  • A hardworking parent who always sacrificed, so you believe you must too
  • A moment where your worth was equated with your income

By compassionately turning toward these shadow parts, we begin to integrate them, rather than exile them. And in that integration, there is freedom.

The Path to Financial Safety Is the Path Home to Yourself

Healing money trauma is not just about financial literacy.

It’s about emotional sovereignty, somatic safety, and spiritual reclamation.

When we heal the nervous system, we open the gateway to abundance — not just in our bank accounts, but in our sense of self, our relationships, our joy.

You are not broken. You are becoming.

And your body — your brilliant, protective, sacred body — is your greatest ally on the journey.

Somatic Practices to Regulate Financial Fear

You don’t need a PhD in neuroscience to heal your money story.

You don’t need to memorize the names of brain structures or explain polyvagal theory at a dinner party.

What you do need?

✨ Curiosity.

✨ Consistency.

✨ Compassion.

That’s it.

Your body already knows how to heal. It just needs a little space — and a signal that it’s safe to soften.

When financial fear arises — whether it’s triggered by an unexpected bill, a conversation about pricing, or an internal voice saying “you’re not enough” — you can use simple, body-based practices to gently regulate your nervous system.

Imagine you’re standing in line at the grocery store. You swipe your card and it declines. Heat rises in your cheeks. You feel exposed, ashamed, small. Your breath becomes shallow, your hands tremble, your mind races. You smile apologetically, but inside, your whole system is screaming.

This is not overreacting. It’s your body trying to protect you — just like it did years ago when scarcity meant going to bed hungry or being told, “We can’t afford that.”

These practices don’t fix the situation. But they help your body return to safety — and from that place, your clarity and intuition can return.

Here are a few of my favorite somatic tools to help restore calm, grounded presence around money:

1. Orienting 🌀

This practice comes from trauma-informed somatic therapy and is incredibly simple — and powerful.

How to do it:

Gently turn your head from side to side. Let your eyes land on objects around the room — textures, colors, shapes. Let your body register your environment.

This simple act signals to your brain:

“I am here. I am not in danger. I am safe right now.”

In moments of money fear, your nervous system may be caught in the past or projecting into the future. Orienting helps bring you back to this moment, where power lives.

2. Extended Exhale Breathing🌬️

Your breath is your built-in medicine. And when used intentionally, it can calm the vagus nerve and shift your body out of fight-or-flight.

Try this pattern:

  • Inhale gently through the nose for 4 counts
  • Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 to 8 counts

Repeat this for 2–3 minutes, or until you feel a subtle shift.

You might notice your shoulders lower, your thoughts slow, or a sense of “okayness” return.

Breath is the bridge between body and spirit. When in doubt, return to it.

3. Butterfly Hug🤲

This soothing technique is used in EMDR and trauma integration to calm the body and regulate intense emotion.

How to do it:

  • Cross your arms over your chest, placing your hands on your opposite shoulders
  • Close your eyes or soften your gaze
  • Gently tap left-right, back and forth, like wings fluttering

As you tap, speak softly to yourself:

“It’s okay to feel this. I am here. I am safe now.”

Use this practice when fear feels overwhelming or when old money wounds surface. It brings you back to the truth of your present resilience.

4. Somatic Journaling📓

Not all journaling has to come from your mind. Somatic journaling is an invitation to listen to your body’s wisdom.

Try this prompt:

“Where do I feel this fear in my body?”

“If this sensation could speak, what would it say?”

“What does it need from me right now?”

You might feel tightness in your chest, a lump in your throat, or heat in your belly. Let that place have a voice on the page. Write without judgment. This is sacred dialogue between you and your inner protector.

Often, this kind of journaling unlocks deeper truth than your conscious mind could ever access.

5. Sacred Money Ritual🕯️

Ritual is a beautiful way to anchor safety and reverence into your relationship with money. It invites the sacred into the everyday — and helps re-pattern the fear that money is only about logic or survival.

Try this simple ritual:

  • Light a candle to symbolize illumination and clarity

I’ve watched women light their candle and hold a simple coin like it’s a prayer stone. One woman whispered, “This is the first time I’ve touched money without flinching in years.” Another cried as she spoke her intention, realizing she had never once said out loud that she felt worthy to receive.

  • Hold a coin in your palm or place it on your altar
  • Take a deep breath and speak aloud your intention:

“May I relate to money with grace, trust, and sufficiency.

I am safe to receive. I am open to flow.

I am enough, and there is enough.”

Let this be a moment of prayer, presence, and restoration.

💛 A Final Word

Regulating financial fear is not about bypassing the real challenges in your life.

It’s about giving your body enough safety to access your power and presence again.

  • From that place, you can respond instead of react.
  • You can choose instead of collapse.
  • You can receive instead of resist.

Your body is not the enemy of your abundance — it’s the vessel through which it flows.

A Spiritual Approach to Nervous System Healing and Abundance

As a minister and metaphysical teacher, I also see how spiritual bypassing often shows up around money:

  • “Just think positive.”
  • “Money is energy, so don’t focus on the negative.”
  • “God will provide.”

While those statements may carry truth, they can dismiss your lived, embodied reality.

We are divine and human.

We are infinite and impacted.

You are allowed to feel afraid and choose faith. You are allowed to admit struggle and call in abundance.

Healing money shadows means learning to sit at the sacred crossroads of spirit, psychology, and somatics — where nothing is denied, and everything is welcomed home.

Final Reflection: Coming Home to Safety and Enoughness

If financial fear has been your silent companion, I want you to know this:

  • You are not behind.
  • You are not broken.
  • You are not failing.
  • You are awakening.

The tightness in your chest? A doorway.

The shame you carry? A signal.

The longing you feel? A sacred invitation.

You are being called to come home to yourself — not the self that hustles or hides, but the self who knows she is enough, who knows she is worthy, who knows she is held.

Let the healing begin not just in your bank account — but in your body, your breath, your beliefs.

This is the quantum path. And it starts with a whisper:

“I am safe now.”

💛 Ready to gently heal your relationship with money from the inside out?

  • You don’t need another budget.
  • You need to feel safe.
  • Safe to look at your bank account without spiraling.
  • Safe to receive without guilt.
  • Safe to claim what you’re worth — without shame, sabotage, or self-doubt.

That’s what true money healing is.

And it doesn’t happen by force.

It happens gently… consistently… through compassion, awareness, and inner alignment.
