Crystal Therapy: Pretty Rocks with Cosmic Powers (Allegedly)

If crystals heal, are mountains hospitals? Are mines pharmacies? Are jewelers doctors? And if I swallow a diamond, do I become immortal?

What Is Crystal Therapy?

Placing crystals on your body to “balance energies.” Rose quartz for love, amethyst for calm, black tourmaline for protection, citrine for prosperity. The idea: crystals have a natural “vibration” that harmonizes yours. Like tuning a radio, but with rocks.

The Crystal Shop Experience

You walk in looking for a rose quartz and walk out with $200 worth of minerals because the seller convinced you that you need selenite for calm, obsidian for protection, and an amethyst geode “for the home’s energy.” It’s IKEA, but with superpowers and no assembly instructions.

And then there’s crystal cleaning. Crystals “absorb energies” and must be periodically “cleansed.” How? Under a full moon, buried in salt, passed through sage smoke. It’s like having a mineral pet: they require care, attention, and a lunar calendar.

What Science Says

A classic 2001 study showed people reported identical sensations with real crystals and plastic fakes. The participant’s expectations, not the crystal, determined the experience.
