Truth of Life

Why Imperfection Makes Life Worth Living

The truth of life is a multifaceted concept that combines unavoidable realities with opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. It teaches us that life is not a straight path paved only with success and happiness. Instead, it is a journey filled with uncertainty, change, triumphs, setbacks, and countless lessons along the way.

Life often presents us with situations that are unexpected and difficult to explain. We may meet with an accident that occurs without warning. We may lose a job despite having done nothing wrong. A long-term relationship may come to an end over seemingly trivial matters. We may fail an examination despite being well prepared and confident of success.

Such incidents make us feel vulnerable, nervous, depressed, and dejected. During these moments, we often ask ourselves, “Why me?” We search for answers and try to understand the reason behind our suffering. However, many of life’s events do not come with explanations. No matter how hard we try to connect them with logic, the answers often remain beyond our reach.

Yet this is only one side of life.

There is another side where events unfold entirely in our favour. Opportunities arrive unexpectedly. Problems resolve themselves. Success comes when we least expect it. Sometimes life serves us blessings on a platter, leaving us pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Interestingly, during such moments, we rarely ask, “Why me?” Instead, we consider ourselves fortunate. Some credit their hard work and determination, while others attribute their success to divine grace and blessings. Whatever the explanation may be, favourable events are usually accepted with gratitude rather than questioning.

Life is a journey that begins in childhood and continues through youth, adulthood, and finally old age. Along this journey, we meet countless people, experience endless situations, and encounter a wide range of emotions. Some experiences are pleasant, while others are painful. Some are encouraging, while others are discouraging. Some are frightening, while others are inspiring.

Life is, therefore, a mixed bag. It is a roller-coaster ride that contains darkness and light, pain and gain, joy and sorrow, victory and defeat. These experiences are not separate from life; they are life itself.

One realisation that has become increasingly clear to me is that perfection does not truly exist.

Every object, every situation, and every individual possesses some degree of imperfection. Sometimes the variation is so small that it goes unnoticed, yet it remains present.

Take the moon, for example. We often regard it as a symbol of beauty, yet its surface contains visible shadows and blemishes. Likewise, ornaments cannot be made from pure 24-carat gold alone. Gold must be mixed with other metals such as copper, silver, zinc, or nickel to gain strength and durability. Without these additions, the ornament would be too soft to serve its purpose.

Life follows the same principle.

Just as the moon remains beautiful despite its imperfections, and gold becomes useful through its mixture with other metals, human life gains depth and meaning through its challenges, setbacks, and imperfections.

The world we live in is not perfect, and neither are we. Success cannot exist without failure. Courage cannot exist without fear. Wisdom cannot exist without mistakes. It is through our struggles that we learn resilience, and through our disappointments that we learn appreciation.

As I reflect upon my own experiences, I have come to a simple conclusion: life is beautiful.

It is diverse, dynamic, and filled with countless shades of experience. It offers lessons in every season and opportunities for growth in every challenge. Opinions may differ, and each person’s journey is unique, but from my personal perspective, life — with all its uncertainties, imperfections, joys, and sorrows — is truly worth living.

The truth of life is not that it is perfect.

The truth of life is that it is imperfect, and therein lies its beauty.
