The Palace of the Romanian Parliament , also known as the House of the People , is located in Bucharest , the capital of Romania. It is the seat of the Romanian legislative power.
The titanic building was constructed between 1984 and 1997. It was the dream of Nicolae Ceausescu (former Romanian dictator). Its construction required the demolition of 7 square kilometers of the city’s historic center, and 40,000 people were forcibly displaced from the area. It covers 330,000 square meters and is the second-largest administrative building in the world, and the third-largest in terms of volume.
All the materials used in the construction come from Romania. Beneath the People’s House is an entire underground city: two nuclear bunkers with 20 kilometers of tunnels leading to all the most important national centers: the Military Academy, the Ministry of Defense, and the Intelligence Service Headquarters.
The building is able to withstand an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale and the equivalent power of two atomic bombs.
