Cappadocia: More Than Just a Balloon Ride. Here’s the Legend of the Three Beauties

Have you ever heard of Cappadocia? Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Even if you haven’t heard the name, I’m sure you’ve seen photos of colorful balloons floating in the sky. But Cappadocia is not just about hot air balloons and luxury hotels. How so?

Cappadocia is legendary for its natural beauty. Every year, two million tourists, photographers, and nature lovers from all over the world flock here just to see the Fairy Chimneys. These natural wonders are located in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir, only five minutes away from the center. Some of these rock formations can even reach the height of a two- or three-story building.

According to scientists, these geological structures date back millions of years. After volcanic eruptions, the lava spread across the plateau, creating a soft tuff layer (a type of rock formed from volcanic ash) on top. These tuffs were then covered by lava again, solidifying into the unique formations we see today. Over time, some of these rocks cracked and were eroded by rain, rivers, lakes, and wind. Temperature changes played one of the biggest roles in shaping them into what they are now.

But beyond all this, there are whispered legends among the locals, stories told to children at night, and myths unknown to tourists. Some may dismiss them as mere fairy tales, but others, those who believe in unseen forces, miracles, and the power of tearful prayers, listen to them with hands over their hearts. And what is this story, you ask? Come closer…

Once upon a time… According to legend, a mighty king and his breathtakingly beautiful daughter lived in Cappadocia. The king was so devoted to his daughter that he couldn’t bear to share her with anyone. But as fate would have it, the girl grew up and, to the king’s dismay, fell in love — with a shepherd. The proud king could not accept a mere shepherd as his daughter’s suitor. Despite his deep love for her, his pride prevailed, and he rejected their love, ignoring all her tears and pleas.

But love knows no boundaries. One night, under the cover of the darkest hour, the princess fled with her beloved, casting one last sorrowful glance behind her at the home she was leaving. Days turned into nights, and eventually, the couple welcomed a newborn baby into the world — their bundle of joy. The princess hoped that the news of his grandchild would soften her father’s heart. But things didn’t go as she had dreamed. Upon hearing about the baby, the furious king became even more enraged. He ordered his entire army to find and capture the runaway couple.

Cornered by the king’s soldiers and realizing they had nowhere left to run, the princess did the only thing a mother and a wife could do in that moment. She raised her hands to the heavens and prayed desperately, with tears streaming down her face, begging for a miracle.

And sometimes, right at such a moment, the impossible happens. Her prayer was answered, and the family was turned into eternal fairy chimneys, forever standing together.

According to legend, the foremost chimney represents the shepherd, the middle one their child, and the one behind the princess. They say if you climb up and down the hill by the “Three Beauties” seven times, you’ll be blessed with a child. Do you think no one would do that? Maybe you just haven’t been desperate enough — or wanted something badly enough — to believe in miracles, legends, or even stories.

The Three Beauties are the symbol and the jewel of Cappadocia, and the most photographed spot at sunset. You can access the viewing hill for free, and also enjoy the magnificent view of Mount Erciyes.

But our story doesn’t end here. Years later, the cruel king’s son, Revan, fell in love with Gülperi, the daughter of the Fairy King. But once again, love was met with sorrow. This time, the people opposed the lovers, and a war broke out between humans and fairies. The Fairy King, heartbroken, abandoned Cappadocia, refusing to fight.

Realizing that humans could not defeat giants, the Fairy King gave one final order to his kind: “Stay behind, turn into doves, and live among them!” Gülperi, too, turned into a pure white dove. Every day, she flew to Revan’s window, unable to part from her beloved. But Revan, unaware of the Fairy King’s command, believed Gülperi had abandoned him. He waited for her until the end of his days, unaware that the beautiful dove visiting his window was his true love, and he tenderly caressed it every day, hoping to ease the aching void in his heart.

Imagine hearing such a story as a child and feeling sorrowful for the petrified princess and her family as you walked down those stairs. That was exactly what happened to me. And with the vivid imagination of a child, I believed it without question; it had happened, it was real.

To this day, that trip to Cappadocia remains one of the most unforgettable journeys of my life. Even after soaring meters above the ground in a hot air balloon, my mind lingered on the story of the princess who had wished for salvation. I suppose I should thank the tour guide for that. Even if he dramatized the story a bit too much, he gave us all an experience we could never forget.

And that is exactly why, amid the rush for fancy hotels, rented cars, and luxurious restaurants during our travels, we might actually be missing the most important part. Of course, I can’t deny the joy of spending a starry night in Cappadocia’s magnificent cave hotels. But the true magic lies in the stories, the beliefs, the whispers passed down through generations.

It’s the lives lived millions of years before us, the echoes of their stories, and the tiny voice in your mind wondering “What if?” that make every journey unforgettable. Maybe, just maybe, this is the very essence of traveling — what makes us want to remember, share, and capture these moments even years later. Just think about it…
