You upload a vacation photo to a forum. A few hours later, a stranger replies with the exact street corner where you took it — including which side of the road you were standing on. They didn’t reverse-image-search. They just opened the file.

That’s EXIF data. And almost everyone underestimates it.

The Quick Version of What EXIF Is

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a block of metadata embedded inside image files — primarily JPEGs, but also HEIC, TIFF, and increasingly PNG and WebP. Cameras and phones write to it automatically every time the shutter fires. It was designed to help photographers track their settings, but over the years it has expanded to include nearly everything about a photo except the photo itself.

A single image can contain:

  • GPS latitude, longitude, and altitude — often accurate to within a few meters
  • Camera make, model, and sometimes serial number
  • Lens, focal length, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance
  • The exact date and time, down to the second, in the device’s timezone
  • The software used to edit it, plus a partial edit history
  • Author, copyright, and description fields you may not even know you set
  • Thumbnails — sometimes preserving the original image even after you’ve cropped it

Most of this is harmless. Some of it is a privacy time bomb.

Things to Take Care of Regarding EXIF

Before we get to tools, here’s what actually matters in day-to-day handling of EXIF data. These are the lessons people usually learn the hard way.

1. Assume every photo from your phone has GPS in it

If you’ve ever granted your camera app location access — even once, even years ago — there’s a good chance your photos are geotagged. Check your phone’s settings under Camera → Location (iOS) or Camera → Save location (Android). Turning it off stops future photos from being tagged; it does nothing to the thousands already on your device.

2. Social media is not a privacy filter

Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) strip most EXIF data on upload — but they replace it with their own tracking. WhatsApp, Telegram (when sending as “file”), Signal, email attachments, Slack, Discord, and direct downloads from Google Drive or Dropbox typically preserve EXIF in full. If your workflow ever involves sharing a photo outside a major social network, assume the metadata travels with it.

3. Screenshots leak less, but not nothing

A screenshot of a photo strips the original EXIF, but on iOS and some Android builds the screenshot itself gets a fresh metadata block including device model, screen resolution, and timestamp. Useful to know if you’re trying to anonymize a leaked image.

4. Cropping does not always remove the original

JPEG editors that operate “losslessly” sometimes preserve a thumbnail of the uncropped image inside EXIF. There’s a long history of people cropping out sensitive parts of a photo only to have the full version recoverable from the embedded preview. Always re-export through a tool that explicitly clears thumbnails, or strip metadata after cropping.

5. Removing EXIF can break orientation

The Orientation tag is what tells your phone gallery to display a photo right-side up even when the underlying pixels are rotated. Strip EXIF naively and the image may suddenly display sideways in apps that respect the tag. Good metadata removers either preserve orientation or physically rotate the pixels first.

6. RAW files are a special case

Don’t strip EXIF from RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, etc.) unless you know exactly what you’re doing. RAW formats embed proprietary “MakerNotes” that the manufacturer’s software needs to render the image correctly. Remove them and your photo may look subtly — or dramatically — wrong. Convert to JPEG first, then strip.

7. PDFs carry metadata too

If you export a photo into a PDF (insurance claims, real estate listings, ID verification), the original EXIF often rides along inside the PDF. Some tools can extract it back out. Clean the photo before you embed it.

8. EXIF is editable, which cuts both ways

Anyone can rewrite EXIF fields. This is great for protecting privacy and terrible for forensic trust. If you ever rely on EXIF for legal, journalistic, or insurance purposes — corroborate with the original RAW, the camera’s own logs, or independent timestamps. Treat EXIF as a hint, not proof.

9. Zip the metadata habit into your export workflow

The most reliable privacy practice is not “remember to strip EXIF before sharing.” It’s making metadata removal part of your normal export pipeline. Lightroom, Photoshop, and Capture One all have an “Include metadata” toggle on export. Set it to Copyright Only or None once and forget about it.

10. Keep originals; share copies

Never strip EXIF from your only copy of a photo. The data is genuinely useful — for organizing libraries by camera, rebuilding travel itineraries, learning from your own settings, or proving authorship. Always strip on a copy meant for sharing, and keep a clean archive of originals somewhere your sharing workflow can’t touch.

Tools to View and Remove EXIF Data

The landscape splits cleanly into four buckets: browser-based tools (fastest, most private if implemented correctly), desktop apps (best for batch work), command-line tools (most powerful), and built-in OS features (already on your machine). Here’s a curated list that covers each.

The single most important question to ask any “online EXIF remover” is whether it actually uploads your file. If your privacy tool requires sending your GPS-tagged photo to a server you don’t control, you’ve defeated the entire purpose. It reads and writes more metadata formats than any other tool — EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC profiles, plus the proprietary MakerNotes of dozens of camera manufacturers. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Common commands worth memorizing:

One caveat: ExifTool warns that for PDFs the original metadata is never actually deleted — it’s marked as removed but still recoverable. Use a dedicated PDF cleaner like qpdf --linearize or re-export the PDF if that matters.

ImageMagick

mogrify -strip *.jpg

Fast, scriptable, and likely already installed on any developer’s machine. Less precise than ExifTool — it strips everything indiscriminately — but excellent for batch jobs in build pipelines.

Built-In OS Features

Windows

Right-click any image → PropertiesDetails tab → Remove Properties and Personal Information at the bottom. You can either create a stripped copy or modify the original. Works well for one-off cleanups.

macOS Preview

Open the image → Tools → Show Inspector → ⓘ tab → GPS pane → Remove Location Info. Strips GPS only, leaving camera settings intact. For full removal you’ll need a third-party tool or ExifTool.

iOS (Photos app, iOS 15+)

Tap Share → Options (at the top of the share sheet) → toggle off Location. The shared copy goes out without GPS. The original on your device keeps it.

Android

Behavior varies by manufacturer. Google Photos: open a photo → ⋮ menu → Remove location. Samsung Gallery has a similar option under Edit → More. For other manufacturers, your safest bet is a third-party app or sharing through a tool that strips on its own.

A Simple Default Workflow

If you take only one thing from this article, make it a default workflow:

  1. For sensitive shares (photos of your home, your kids, your travel routine, any document, anything for a stranger on the internet): run the file through a client-side stripper like FilesDesk or ExifCleaner before posting. Verify it processes locally.
  2. For routine social posts: trust the major platforms to strip on upload, but never rely on them when sharing via email, messaging apps, or direct download.
  3. For professional work: bake metadata stripping into your export preset in Lightroom or whichever editor you use. Set it once.
  4. For archives: keep originals untouched. Always strip a copy.

EXIF isn’t the enemy. It’s a tool, like any tool, it’s most dangerous when you don’t know it’s there.

The fix isn’t paranoia. It’s awareness and a habit.
