How IT Support Uses Ticketing Systems: A Simple Jira Walkthrough

Ticketing systems are at the heart of IT support, helping teams track issues, prioritise work, and stay organised. In this walkthrough, I’ll use Jira Service Management to show how a basic IT ticket flows from creation to resolution. This simple example reflects what you’d handle in a real helpdesk role and builds a solid foundation for future support work.

Setup an Account on Jira

To start we will setup an account with a service called Jira, a website which provides a ticketing system we can use to practice for free.

  1. Go to the following link and setup and account for free, you can use you’re gmail, or miscrosoft account for faster access. https://www.atlassian.com/try/cloud/signup?bundle=jira-software&edition=free&skipBundles=true

  1. It will then ask you to create a site, name it however you like.

  1. It will then prompt you for the following, click on IT support.

  1. Then for a template select Kanban, as it is the closest to a real IT support workflow apparently.

  1. Then you can name this whatever you like, and click Get started. Then click next on the following.

  1. Click on Go to Jira.

Hands on creating a ticket.

This section we will be covering how to actually create tickets. the format, and different options we have as if we where in, or running our own IT support service.

  1. We will start off by clicking on

  1. Lets say for example someone is having an issue with out, you would put in the Summary something along the lines of Outlook issue.

  1. You have many other options such as putting a description of the issue, also being able to assign the task to members of the IT team.

Including options to select the priority of the ticket.

  1. Once we have created the ticket go to it from the list view, and you can see we can add comments down below to add input about the issue.

  1. Then on the right hand corner we can select the following drop down option and select resolve to show this ticket is now been resolved.

Conclusion

This walkthrough showed the basics of creating and managing tickets in Jira using a simple Kanban workflow. You’ve seen how issues move from creation to resolution, just like they would in a real IT support environment. From here, the best way to build confidence is to experiment — create test tickets, update their status, add comments, and explore the different views to get comfortable with how a ticketing system works
