Deo-lightful Beginnings: Fog, Kochuri & Finding Peace in Deoghar — Day 1!!
Hello, fellow wanderers! ✨
And just like that, our Deoghar adventure has KICKED OFF! Buckle up, because Day 1 was a beautiful, slightly chaotic, soul-stirring, and utterly delicious rollercoaster.
Our day in Kolkata began not with an alarm, but with a collective family gasp — we’d overslept by a whole hour! 😱 But you know what? The universe knew what it was doing. That delay meant the pesky morning fog had magically cleared, paving the way for a gloriously smooth drive out of the city. Serendipity, I tell you!
The first pitstop was non-negotiable: Highway Mirchi. A tradition as sacred as the journey itself! The chilly morning air was absolutely begging for a treat, and we answered with hot, crispy Koraishutir Kochuri and Aloo Sabji. Washed down with not one, but TWO steaming cups of chai. Pure bliss! I even mustered some “winter courage” and snapped a quick photo without my jacket — much to my bapi’s horror. 😄
Now, here’s a pro-tip we got from a wise local: we took the Asansol route instead of the Dumka road. A solid decision! While the road wasn’t exactly “smooth like butter” (think more… vibrant and lively!), it was an experience. We passed through charming village stretches, with the everyday hustle-bustle spilling onto the road. And you know what? We loved every second of it! The scenic beauty — lush fields and serene landscapes — was absolutely blowing our minds. The journey was just as beautiful as the destination.
And speaking of the destination, we reached our home for the next few days: The Magnum Hotel. A lovely, luxurious four-star property that felt like a warm hug after the drive. We dumped our luggage, parked the car, did a quick freshen-up dance, and were OUT again, because there’s no time to waste!
Our first sightseeing stop was Nandan Pahar, just a short 2–3 km drive away (shoutout to my super-dad, the chauffeur for the day!). This place is BEAUTIFUL. A vibrant, colourful hill park that feels like a happy, whimsical land. There’s a charming amusement park for kids, a lovely fountain, and the most adorable, giant statues of demons and Bhole Baba everywhere! The names of the spots are so sweet. I, of course, had to be a kid again and swing on a giant swing — the view from up there was incredible! You can see the entire boating area below. Picture-perfect!
Feeling spiritually curious, we swung by Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra’s Ashram on our way back. The atmosphere here is instantly calming and profoundly spiritual. We were so tempted to stay! Important Note for Travellers: If you wish to stay at the ashram for free, you need to have taken ‘Diksha’ from them. A highly recommended, cheap, and beautiful option if you plan ahead!
As dusk settled, we felt the pull of the divine and headed to Baba Dham (Baidyanath Temple) to witness the enchanting evening Aarti. The energy, the chants, the devotion — it’s something you have to feel to believe.
We rolled back to The Magnum, our hearts full. A quick pitstop for me involved devouring some street-side momos, while my parents, still happily stuffed from our FANTASTIC hotel lunch, called it a night. I must add — the food and service at the hotel are top-notch and truly appreciable!
And that, my friends, was our wonderfully imperfect, perfectly amazing Day 1 in Deoghar! From highway feasts to spiritual beats, it was everything we hoped for and more. 🌿✨

Day 2: Divine Chaos, Mountain Monkeys & The Most Thrilling Cave of My Life!
Namaste, adventure souls! 🙏
If Day 1 was about settling in, Day 2 in Deoghar was a full-throttle, spiritual whirlwind that left us exhausted, exhilarated, and deeply, deeply happy. Get ready for a story of temple runs, sweet pedas, and a cave that tested our courage!
We were up with the stars today — bathed, decked out, and out the door by 5 AM! The mission: Baba Dham (Baidyanath Temple) for the ultimate morning darshan.
Baba Dham Darshan: A Test of Faith & Patience The temple complex, with its 22 beautifully divine smaller temples, is magnificent. Our Pandit ji was efficient, but a word to the wise (from experience!): be crystal clear about prices, Prasad, and offerings beforehand. The nature of the hustle is real. Also, a heartfelt note: if you’re claustrophobic or have knee issues, please consider avoiding entering the main Garbha Griha (sanctum). The rush and jostling from devotees and priests is intense. The special “Sparsh Puja” (where you touch the Shivling) is unique here. We took the VIP line (₹300/person), which still took about an hour in the early morning frenzy. The general line can take 3+ hours. It was hectic, but the darshan was powerful. Post-darshan, we explored the other temples and did the most important thing: bought the legendary Deoghar Peda! 🍬 YOU CANNOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THIS SWEET! It’s divine in its own right.
A funny cultural moment: we had tea a little away from the Paschim Gate. The shop was so wonderfully conservative that we had to wash our hands before having biscuits, and then again after! No eating before puja — respect!
Hotel Intermission & Road Trip! We headed back to The Magnum for a delightful breakfast (shout-out to their amazing, fresh vegetable salad — it was a wow after all that peda!), freshened up, and hit the road for Basukinath Temple (about 50 km away).
Pro-Tip for Drivers: The road is under construction (read: bumpy!). Park your car where they collect the road tax near the temple. The inner lanes are insanely congested. Good luck if you venture further!
Basukinath was serene and divine, with a similar two-line system for darshan. The vibe was beautiful, complete with real, live Nandis (bulls) roaming around, giving the place such an authentic, blessed feel.
Mountains, Monkeys & My Dramatic Photo Op! Next stop: Trikut Pahar (about 30 km from Basukinath). OH, WHAT A LOVELY PLACE! Yes, there are many, many stairs and a bit of a trek to the ashram at the top, but the journey is half the fun! You’ll find cute gift shops, heavenly masala chai stalls, and hilarious, loosely arranged photo studios where you can dress up as Shiv-Parvati! But the REAL stars are the MONKEYS! 🐒 VERY IMPORTANT: Take a local guide. They are essential for monkey diplomacy! You can buy food to feed them and get incredible pictures (I got my most dramatic pose yet!). DO NOT CHATTER NEAR THEM — a simian slap is a real possibility! It was equal parts terrifying and hilarious.
The Tapovan Adventure: Bajrangbali’s Test From there, we went to Tapovan (10 km away). And here comes the adventure of a lifetime: the climb to the Hanuman Cave. You might need a guide, but my Mumma turned into our fearless leader and deserves a thousand medals! The climb is no joke — one misstep could lead to a mishap. It’s pure, raw adventure. With our hearts in our mouths and prayers to Bajrangbali on our lips, we navigated it. The relief and hysterical giggles after coming out safe were unreal! I made friends with a sweet 7-year-old girl from a Bihari group ahead of us — shared thrills create instant bonds!
The Perfect, Peaceful Finale Our final destination was the Naulakha Temple (dedicated to Bal Gopal). After the day’s chaos, this was bliss. So beautiful, calm, and peaceful. Make this your last stop — it washes away all the hustle and fills your mind with serenity. We had a simple dinner at a little place nearby and drank the best chai of the trip, watching the temple lights twinkle in the night.
Day 2 was a marathon of devotion, landscapes, laughter, and life-threatening monkey encounters. And I wouldn’t change a single second! ✨

Day 3: Ashrams, Bhog & Bliss — A Soulful Farewell to Deoghar! ✨
Hello, beautiful souls!
If Days 1 & 2 were about divine frenzy and adventure, Day 3 was the gentle, profound sigh of contentment. Today was all about soaking in peace, philosophy, and the most delicious community meal of my life. Get ready for some serious serenity!
Morning of Mindfulness: The Ashram Circuit We dedicated our final day to the profound peace of ashrams. First, we revisited the magnificent Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra’s Satsang Sevashram. By daylight, it’s even more breathtaking! The grounds are massive, immaculately maintained, and feel like a botanical garden with unique trees, flowers, and birdsong. Seeing the accommodations for thousands of devotees (remember my pro-tip about Diksha for stays!) was incredible. The entire place is so pretty and thoughtfully decorated — a true oasis of calm. A must-visit, even for a stroll.
Just 4 km away lies the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Sevashram (RVMS). We parked easily inside the Vidyapeeth (note: visiting hours are 8–11 AM). And friends, this place… it touched my soul.
A Youth Icon’s Sanctuary Inside, there’s a small museum dedicated to Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Deb and Swami Vivekananda. For any young person (or young-at-heart!), this feels like walking into inspiration. Swamiji’s energy is palpable here — he truly is the eternal hero for the youth. Beside the memorial is a serene prayer hall. The atmosphere is so potent, you’ll instinctively want to sit down, close your eyes, and meditate. It’s a one-time experience you simply cannot rush.
The Feast of a Lifetime: Mahaprasad Bhog! Then came a highlight: we decided to have Bhog (community lunch) at the ashram. We got coupons for just ₹75 per head. At sharp 12:30 PM, we were served a full-course, satvik, and utterly delicious meal — the flavors were simple, pure, and divine. Part of the beautiful practice is washing your own utensils after eating, fostering humility and community. It was the perfect, grounding end to our spiritual explorations.
Stay Note: If you wish to stay here, you need to email the secretary of RVMS at least 3 months in advance, and having Diksha from the mission is beneficial.
The Icing on the Cake This day of calm, culminating in that soulful meal, felt like the icing on the cake of our entire trip. The place is utterly beautiful, and the experience was nourishing for both body and spirit.
Homeward Bound & Heartfelt Gratitude As we began our return drive to Kolkata (taking the route from Baba Dham towards the Jamtara road for a smoother ride), my heart was full.
This trip wouldn’t have been possible or half as amazing without my mom holding everything in place and Bapi (Dad), our champion driver. His care, patience, and perfect navigation over this long trip made everything effortless and safe. A huge shout-out to him! 🚗💚 And of course, to our trusty car and its lifesaving in-built GPS — you are the real MVP! Haha!
Deoghar, you’ve been a spectacular blend of chaos and calm, devotion and adventure, pedas and peace. You’ve left an indelible mark on us.
This concludes our Deoghar Diaries! Thank you for riding along on this virtual journey. Until the next adventure…
Keep wandering, keep wondering, and never forget to wash your own utensils sometimes — it’s good for the soul. 😉
With love and travel dust, Aaheli 💫
