I didn’t learn this lesson in a classroom or from a book.

It came to me slowly through conversations, heartbreaks, and the quiet observations you make when you’re finally honest with yourself.

When people don’t know the value of something, they misuse it.

And the most painful place to witness this truth is in relationships.

The Story That Taught Me Everything

There was someone I once knew, let’s call her Maya.

She wasn’t loud or dramatic. She didn’t demand attention. She simply showed up for the people she cared about. She remembered birthdays, checked in on bad days, and celebrated small wins like they were national holidays.

Her presence was steady, like a warm light in a familiar room.

And because she was steady, people assumed she’d always be there.

One person in particular, someone she loved deeply treated her consistency like background noise. He didn’t mean to hurt her; he just didn’t understand the weight of what he had. Her kindness felt ordinary to him. Her loyalty felt guaranteed. Her patience felt endless.

Until it wasn’t.

One day, Maya stopped showing up. Not out of spite, but out of exhaustion.

She had poured so much of herself into someone who never realized he was holding something rare.

And when she walked away, he finally saw it.

The silence she left behind was louder than all the words she had ever spoken.

That’s when it hit me:

Value is often invisible until it’s gone.

How Misuse Creeps In

Misuse doesn’t always look like cruelty.

Sometimes it looks like:

Forgetting to say thank you

Assuming someone will always forgive

Believing effort doesn’t need to be reciprocated

Taking presence as permanence

People don’t always set out to misuse what they have.

Sometimes they simply don’t recognize its worth.

Why We Fail to See Value

I’ve thought about this a lot, and I’ve realized it often comes down to a few things:

Familiarity.

When someone is always there, we stop noticing the effort behind their presence.

Immaturity.

Some hearts haven’t grown enough to appreciate what they’re given.

Fear.

Good things can feel suspicious to people who’ve only known chaos.

Assumption.

We assume what’s good will stay, even when we neglect it.

But value doesn’t disappear.

It simply moves to where it’s recognized.

The Cost of Misuse

The person who keeps giving eventually runs out.

The one who keeps forgiving eventually stops.

The one who keeps understanding eventually feels misunderstood.

And the one who was taken for granted eventually becomes the one who got away.

The cost of misuse is often regret, sharp, heavy, and too late.

Recognizing Value While You Still Have It

Think about the people in your life right now.

The ones who show up.

The ones who care quietly.

The ones who make your world softer without asking for anything in return.

Ask yourself:

  • Who brings peace instead of chaos
  • Who listens without judgment
  • Who chooses you even when it’s inconvenient
  • Who loves you in ways you didn’t know you needed

These people are not common.

Treat them like the rare gifts they are.

Protecting Your Own Value

And if you’re the one who has been misused. If you’ve been the Maya in someone’s story. Remember this:

Your value doesn’t decrease because someone failed to see it.

Protecting your value means:

  • Setting boundaries
  • Refusing to shrink to be tolerated
  • Walking away when your worth is consistently ignored

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is remove your presence from where it’s being misused.

A Final Thought

Value recognized is value cherished.

Value ignored is value lost.

Look around your life with clearer eyes.

Appreciate what is good while it’s still within reach.

And honour your own worth enough to never let anyone misuse it again.
