The Yankees will play their last series of the season against the Athletics

The Yankees’ final series of the season against the Athletics will start tonight and the series will end on Sunday. In their first series of the season, which was played at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees were outscored just 7–6.

The Yankees lost the last two games of that series to the Athletics 3–2 and then 1–0. The Yankees started the season 0–6 in one run games but since then they have gone 6–5 in one run games.

The last one run game the the Yankees had was their 4–3 win in the first game of their series against the Royals on Monday. The Yankees then outscored the Royals 22–1 in the last two games of the series. The Yankees had an off day on Thursday for their travel day to West Sacramento after extending their winning streak to four games on Wednesday. Going into the four-game winning streak that they are currently on, the Yankees had gone 4–10 in their previous 14 games.

The Yankees have allowed one run or less in three out of their four games during the four game winning streak. In the series finale against the Rays, which the Yankees won 2–0, Ryan Weathers threw seven scoreless innings and threw 60 of his 95 pitches for strikes. In the 15–1 win in the middle game of the Royals series, Cam Schlittler allowed just one run and did not allow a walk in six innings. In the series finale, Gerrit Cole threw 6.2 scoreless innings while recording 10 strikeouts and not walking a batter in his second start back since Tommy John surgery.

Cole now has the most starts in Yankees history with at least 10 strikeouts, zero runs and zero walks allowed. Cole became the fourth Yankees starting pitcher with at least 12 scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts in his first two starts of a season. The others were Mel Stottlemyre, Bob Turley and Slow Joe Doyle.

The Yankees have won all six games they played against the Royals this season 50-10. This is the second time that they have gone at least 6–0 and had at least a +40 run differential against an opponent in one season. The other time they did it was in 1998 when they went 10–0 against the Royals and had a +56 run differential. Many consider the 1998 Yankees the best team of all time. The Yankees went 114–48 during the regular season and then went 11–2 in the playoffs, which included sweeping the San Diego Padres in the World Series.

The Yankees went 4–2 against the Athletics last season and they scored at least 10 runs in three of those wins. The Athletics are currently in their second season playing in West Sacramento after playing their previous 56 seasons in Oakland. They have been steadily improving each of the last four seasons. They went 50–112 in their second to last season in Oakland, they went 69–93 in their last season in Oakland, they went 76–86 in their first season player their home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento and they are 27–29 so far this season. They are just two games below .500 and the last time they did not finish below .500 was in 2021 when they went 86–76.

The Athletics, who have not had a city in their team name since relocating out of Oakland until their new stadium is finished in Las Vegas, are just half a game out of first place in the AL West. The Mariners are in first place with their 28–29 record. The AL West is the worst division in MLB since it does not have a team above .500. The Athletics finished last season 14 games behind the first place Mariners and in 2024, when they had 93 losses, they finished 19.5 games behind the first place Astros.

The Athletics were two games above .500 after winning the last three games of their series against the Angels from May 19-May. 21. They won two extra inning games to end that series against their division rivals from Anaheim. Since May 21, the Athletics have gone 1–5 in their last six games. They have scored two runs or less in four of those five losses. In their last 12 games, the Athletics starting pitchers have a 5.73 ERA.

The Athletics are eighth out of the 15 AL teams in homers, they are ninth out of the 15 teams in steals, they have 10th in doubles and they have the fifth best OPS. On the other hand, the Yankees have the most homers in the AL with 83, they have the third most steals in the AL with 50, they have the most total bases, they have the third most doubles and have one fewer than the Tigers and Orioles and their team OPS of .770 is the best in the AL.

Carlos Cortes’s 161 OPS+ is the best OPS+ on the Athletics. In his second MLB season, the third round pick of the Mets in 2018 has eight doubles, five homers, a .425 OBP and a .952 OPS in 45 games. Shea Langeliers has the most homers on the Athletics with 13. He had a career-high 31 homers last season in 123 games. Nick Kurtz, who was the American League Rookie of the Year last season, leads the league with his 52 walks and his .430 OBP in 55 games.

J.T. Ginn has been the best starting pitcher on the Athletics so far this season. He has a 3.19 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) with a 141 ERA+ and a 1.137 WHIP in 53.2 innings. Jeffrey Springs has been the team’s second best starting pitcher. He has 4.07 ERA in his league leading 12 starts while having a 110 ERA+ and a 1.191 WHIP in 66.1 innings. Springs is on track to having very similar stats as he did in 2025 since last season he had a 4.11 ERA in 32 games (30 starts) with a 109 ERA+ and a 1.211 WHIP.
