Rebirth (Atúnbí): Exploring Spiritual Enlightenment Through Contemporary African Art
In Yoruba, Atúnbí means “rebirth” — not merely a beginning, but a transformation. It is the journey of becoming, shedding what once was, and awakening to what is possible. My latest painting, Rebirth (Atúnbí), explores this sacred transition through symbols deeply rooted in African spirituality and human consciousness.
At the heart of the artwork lies a cracked egg — a universal symbol of birth, potential, and emergence. Nothing can be born without first breaking open. The crack represents both vulnerability and liberation, reminding us that growth often begins where comfort ends.
Surrounding this moment of transformation are cowrie shells, symbols historically associated with wealth, spirituality, protection, and ancestral wisdom across many African cultures. They speak of heritage and abundance — not only in material form but also in knowledge, identity, and purpose.
The three eyes within the composition symbolize enlightenment and expanded perception. Beyond physical sight lies the ability to see inwardly and spiritually. They represent awareness, intuition, and the awakening of one’s true self. Rebirth, therefore, becomes more than an event — it becomes a continuous process of seeing the world and ourselves anew.
As a Nigerian contemporary artist, my practice explores the intersection of spirituality, memory, culture, and human transformation through abstract expression. Rebirth (Atúnbí) invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys of renewal and the beauty that emerges when we embrace change.
