Getting to Diani Beach is not just about distance. It is a combination of transport choices that each affect your time, cost, comfort, and overall travel experience.
It helps to understand how each option behaves in real travel conditions before you decide which one fits your trip better.
But how do you actually choose the right way to get there?
In this guide, we will take you through:
- What are the main travel options from Nairobi to Diani Beach?
- Which is the fastest way to get to Diani Beach?
- How does each transport option work in practice?
- Which option fits different budgets and travel styles?
Let’s break it down into the main ways to get from Nairobi to Diani Beach.
Four Ways to Get There
No one books a trip to Diani without second-guessing the route.
But when you actually break it down, getting from Nairobi to Diani is not complicated at all.
The confusion comes from too many mixed opinions, not from the number of options. Once you understand how each route behaves in real travel conditions, the decision becomes much clearer.
There are four practical ways to get from Nairobi to Diani Beach:
- Direct flights to Ukunda Airstrip
- Flights to Mombasa + Dongo Kundu Bypass
- SGR train to Mombasa + road transfer
- Driving the full route
Which one is right for you depends on your budget, group size, luggage, and how much time you want to spend travelling. That is what we will talk about in the next section.
1. Direct Flights to Ukunda Airstrip
If speed matters more than anything else, this is the fastest and most efficient way to get to Diani Beach. Ukunda Airstrip is located directly in Diani, meaning you avoid highway transfers, city traffic, and ferry crossings entirely.
The Flight
Jambojet operates direct flights from JKIA in Nairobi to Ukunda, while Safarilink and Skyward Express operate flights from Wilson Airport. The flight takes approximately 1 hour.
This is the most time-efficient option, especially for travelers combining safari and beach itineraries. It is slightly more expensive than flying to Mombasa but saves significant travel time and hassle.
Once You Land
Ukunda Airstrip is small and located just minutes from most Diani Beach properties. A tuk-tuk or taxi will typically get you to your accommodation in 5 to 15 minutes.
If you are staying at Silent Palms Villa, we are approximately 5 to 10 minutes from the airstrip and can arrange pickup on request.
2. Flights to Mombasa + Dongo Kundu Bypass
This is a good option if you find better flight prices or need more flexible schedules.
The Flight
Fly from Wilson Airport or JKIA (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) to Moi International Airport (Mombasa). The flight takes around 1 hour. Airlines operating this route include Jambojet and Kenya Airways, with multiple daily departures.
Book early where possible, especially for weekends and holiday periods.
Getting from Mombasa to Diani
From the airport, take an Uber, Bolt, or private taxi toward Diani Beach.
Ask your driver to use the Dongo Kundu Bypass. This avoids Mombasa city traffic and completely bypasses the Likoni Ferry, making the journey smoother and faster.
3. SGR Train
This is one of the most reliable and comfortable ways to reach the coast.
The Route
Take the Madaraka Express from Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau to Mombasa Terminus in Miritini. The journey takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours.
From Mombasa to Diani
From Miritini station, hire a taxi or arrange a transfer to Diani Beach via the Dongo Kundu Bypass. This route avoids ferry delays and city congestion.
4. Driving the Full Route
Do not dismiss the road trip option. It is one of the best ways to experience the journey to the Kenyan coast, especially if you are travelling with a group, carrying extra luggage or sports equipment, or simply want the flexibility to stop along the way.
The Route
Drive from Nairobi via the A109 Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. Before entering Mombasa city, connect onto the Dongo Kundu Bypass, which links directly to the Mombasa–Lunga Lunga Road heading south to Ukunda and Diani Beach.
Journey Time
Expect around 7 to 9 hours depending on traffic, truck movement, and stops.
An early departure between 5am and 6am is recommended to avoid Nairobi traffic and arrive before dark.
Next, once you arrive, things shift completely.
Getting Around Once You Are in Diani
Once you arrive, tuk-tuks quickly become your best friend. They cover the full length of Diani Beach Road for a few hundred shillings per journey. For longer trips to Shimba Hills, Mombasa Old Town, or Watamu, hire a car or use a local taxi driver. Your accommodation can usually recommend a reliable one.
Uber and Bolt do work in Diani, although availability can be patchy compared to Nairobi, so do not rely on them exclusively.
Which Route Should You Choose?
At this point, the options are clear.
But the right choice is not just about what is available, it depends on how you want the journey to feel. Speed, budget, comfort, and convenience all play a different role depending on the kind of trip you are planning.
So instead of guessing, it helps to break it down based on what actually matters most to you when travelling to the coast.
Where to Stay When You Arrive
If you are still deciding where to base yourself once you arrive, a private villa gives you something a resort cannot: your own space, your own pool, your own pace. At Silent Palms Villa on Diani Beach, we have four suite options sleeping couples through to groups of eight, a private pool, a restaurant, and we are 5 to 10 minutes from Ukunda airstrip and 45 minutes from Mombasa airport.
We can arrange airport transfers on request. Just let us know your arrival time and we will handle the rest.
