The 369 SORTWASTE Model: A Logical Approach to the Chaos of Waste Sorting.

In 2019, I experienced a major breakthrough in my life. After 13 years of living in Ireland, I moved back to Poland. My return coincided with a surge in public discourse around waste sorting and the circular economy — a topic that quickly became popular and remains highly relevant today. However, right from the start, I found myself fundamentally disagreeing with the waste management regulations introduced by the Ministry of Environment and Climate.

Take a look at the official informational leaflets (which you might have seen yourself).

The guidelines from Poland are flawed.

The instructions from Ireland are incorrect.

The materials from Italy are just as misguided.

This brings up three critical questions:

  1. Why are the guidelines so drastically different from one country to another?
  2. Why is there no unified, Europe-wide standard for something as essential as sorting waste?
  3. Why do we produce more “rubbish about rubbish” than is actually necessary?

We are flooded with information and educational materials about waste sorting, yet they are often incomplete, illogical, and simply incorrect. All of this material is just noise — an informational chaos that destabilizes the broader economy and, most importantly, the recycling industry. This confusion causes unnecessary headaches for the public. Frustrated by contradictory regulations, people often resort to making up their own sorting rules, or worse, they stop sorting their waste altogether.

I believe we can solve the majority of our waste management problems by grounding our education on sorting in the fundamental principles of mathematics and physics. This is where the strength of the 369 SORTWASTE model lies. It builds a comprehensive theory using a simple equation with three variables: X, Y, and Z. When we sum these variables in a linear equation — X + Y + Z = 18 — we can deduce that X = 3, Y = 6, and Z = 9. Because these variables must hold these specific values and no others, they effectively function as constants. Based on this mathematical foundation, we can construct a logical, universal, and complete theory on how to sort waste — one that transcends borders and can be understood in any language spoken around the world.
